I'm looking into building a new rig as some may have read before, but I don't want to spend a buttload!( Who does? ) These are the parts I am considering at the moment..

New AMD/Intel Quad Core...........$350.00
2x150G Raptor............................$386.00
New AM2+/X38 Board..................$200.00
Silverstone Olympia 650W...........$132.58
Crucial Bal. PC 8500 2 Gb.............$140.00
Antec 900....................................$102.73
1xYate Loon 1x Scythe S-FLEX.....$16.97
Thermaltake Ultra 120 eXtreme.....$48.42
Floppy Drive..................................$5.95
X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Fatal1ty...........$136.93
eVGA 8800 GTS 640Mb.................$379.99
WD Caviar SE16 250GB.................$72.80
Samsung 244T(8 bit)....................$583

(All prices are in Canadian $ and were found on shopbot.ca, except of course for the pieces not currently out!)

Rig will be used for gaming, homework, movies, PS3 etc.

All this comes to approx $2900 CAD after tax.. WHOA!

So today I was playing around with what I could possibly cut out.. So I took out the sound card (use my current SB Audigy 2 ZS) and one of the raptors, but it only drops me to approx $2500.. still WHOA!

I guess my question is.. is there any way I can make a system that performs like this one, yet costs less? (Possibly a dumb question, but that's ok) Is having 1 raptor for OS/apps even worth it?

I guess if you want the best, or close to it, I'm going to have to pay a pretty penny no matter what. :(

Granted by the time the new quad cores come out, these parts will have gone down in price, which is a good thing, but this is just an estimate for the future!

Any advice / comments are appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Live in the US , beg a friend that does live in the US to send the parts to you.
im doing that for a friend that lives in CA all said and done he is saving about $600, he budget though was 3k so you guess.... intel QX6850,sli mobo,4gig,1TB seagate drive....

I would drop both Raptors and get all 7200rpm drives. It has been my opinion that the Raptors are not worth the extra $$. They are a bit faster...but only a bit, and the noise they make always made me think thay were about to fail at any moment. I was not happy with any Raptor I ever had and I have had 4 of them. This is, of course, just my opinion.

I would also ditch the floppy. With USB flash drives and card readers I just never use the floppy anymore. You can also save by getting PC2 6400 RAM and OCing it to 8500 speeds. This will save you about $100 and you will still have Crucial Ballistics.

Good luck
