Yep, title says it all. I'm going to be building a rig for my aunt and need it to be as cheap as possible, yet fairly dependable. I was thinking along the lines of AMD 25-2800+, Abit NF7-S, 512 mushkin, cheap case. It's just going to be used for word processing, watching movies, and listening to music, and also playing some smaller games for her daughter. Preschool related, but should be able to hold up for her earlier Doom games ^_^ If possible, I would like it to be ~$500 excluding a monitor. But including keyboard and mouse, speakers.

Thanks in advance you guys rawk! :p

And if this is in the wrong spot... :bang head

Are there any parts you already have for this machine? If you're starting from scratch I can configure reliable and powerful machines for as little as $350

Yeah really. You're not going to need anything faster than the onboard video unless the daughter happens to want to play Final Fantasy or something. It's 3D capable and performs on-par with low-budget video cards.

And I don't know how far you can push a 2000+ specifically, but we are looking for reliable here.

I would spend a week or two watching http://www.spoofee.com/ and http://www.fatwallet.com/ about once a week Dell puts out a good deal for a day. Look at spoofy for "Tuesday Spoofee Deals" **you would have had to sign up prior for this deal but most times it's just stacking coupons** I have seen some in the $350 and under range from time to time.
Dell Dimension 4600 System with 17" Dell LCD for $579 Shipped After Rebate
Comes with Pentium 4 2.8ghz (533fsb), 256mb DDR memory, 17" Dell LCD, 80GB hard drive, keyboard/mouse, Windows XP, 48x CD-Rom, Word Perfect, and a network card.

That particular deal you needed to sign up to receive Dell emails before hand, but from what I have seen over the past year or so, is 90% stacking coupon codes and configuring the system in a particular way. I would wait till next week just check them out once a day because Dell sometimes catches on and changes stuff.

Hrmm...I think I am signed up with them for email ads on my .edu account. I'll check in a few to see. I think i'm also on with Alienware. :D
