I'm going to take one of my older pc's and make it a dedicated file server. I need about 300 gb HDD space. May I get some suggestions? Thanks

The absolute BEST deals you'll get are sales (in which ironically enough, you also get top notch drives most of the time). As long as you stick to Maxtor, Hitachi, Western Digital, and Seagate, you'll get a good harddrive and then just peruse prices (zipzoomfly.com, newegg.com, etc) or wait for a sale (last week there was a 250 GB HD on sale for $100 :0) to get the best bang for your buck.

I'm running a file server with half a terabyte of storage, and I'm just waiting until there's a sale and I have more money to bring it up to a full terabyte. Seagate's a great company for reliable drives (5 year warranty IIRC), but, as stated above, Hitachi, Western Digital, and Maxtor are good choices as well. I'm running two fairly recent WDs, a new Seagate, and a new Maxtor in my file server, along with a 2GB Quantum Caviar (who got bought by Maxtor) and 3GB Samsung that I just happened to have.

I buy 5400RPM drives for my file server. Not the OS drive, just the storage. While they're not as fast, IMO they'll last longer. I have no real proof to back this up, until they start to fail. I jsut think they'll last a lot longer because they're not going to wear out as fast due to the bearings spinning slower. Not to mention 5400 drives should be going pretty cheap nowadays. :)
