I have an Asus A7V133 and was wondering which PCI slot does everyone put their modem on? Right now mine is on PCI slot 4 and up until recently it has been running fine on there. Before I was able to log on to AOL on the first try (I know, AOL sucks but I'm not paying for it), now it takes me 3 tries and when I do log on the connection is a lot slower now than it used to be. On top of that, my browser doesn't let me surf the web on AOL, or internet explorer. I even changed my modem, but the new modem has the same problems. I noticed this happened after I installed my ATI All in Wonder Radeon, so I uninstalled that and I still have the same problem. I called AOL and they had me do a bunch of stuff, but still the same thing. One person suggested it might be a problem with the IRQ my modem is on which is 9. Here is a summary of my IRQ usage:

00-System timer
01-Standard 101/102 Microsoft natural keyboard
02-Programmable interrupt controller
03-Communications port (Com2)
04-Communications port (Com1)
05-VIA PCI Audio Controller
05-IRQ Holder for PCI steering
06-Standard Floppy Disk Controller
07-ECP Printer Port (LPT1)
08-System CMOS/real time clock
09-Us Robotics 56K Fax Win Int
09-VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
09-VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
09-ACPI IRQ holder for PCI steering
09-SCI IRQ used by ACPI bus
10-ACPI IRQ holder for IRQ steering
10-Win 95-98 Promise Ultra 100 IDE Controller
11-ACPI IRQ holder for PCI steering
11-ATI All In Wonder Radeon
12-PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port
13-Numeric data processor
14-Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
14-VIA Bus Master PCI IDE controller
15-Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)
15-VIA Bus Master PCI IDE controller

If anyone could give me any suggestions on how to solve this problem, it would be greatly appreciated. Is the modem not working right because IRQ 9 is shared by 5 other things? Where would be the best place to stick my modem? I'm planning on getting a sound blaster live platinum 5.1 soon also. Thanks ahead of time and sorry this posting was so long. If you need any additional info please tell me.

You might try putting the modem in slot 5. I have been successfully running with my Geforce Pro in the AGP slot, nothing in slots 1 and 2, SBLive in slot 3, Network Card in 4 and Modem in 5.

I would also do a reformat of your hard drive and a clean install of Windows.

How do I reformat my hard drive? Is that going to erase everything? Could I just reinstall my windows 98 SE update? If you could please explain to me in detail. Thanks

typer,
yes if you reformat your hard drive you will lose everthing that's on the drive you format, although if you have a secondary drive you can move items like DOCS, PICS or anything else you whish to keep, be adviced it's hard to move programs (most likely you can't) no advisable mostly all programs won't work cause it puts varies files in your windows system directory and what not.
i would agree with the format thing (cause) if you reinstall windows right over the top of windows alot of files won't get rewritten (the installation will see the files present and not overwrite them), and at some point you must decide on, time spent on one problem (how much is your time worth ??)
if you wish to reformat and reinstall you would have to have orginal CD'z
1. win98se or 98 come with a boot disk (you have ?)
2. if you have the orginal cd it's bootable (make sure your cd rom is bootable)
3. if you have another drive installed copy the win98 directory off the cd to the drive and format and reinstall off the second drive.
4 if you decide to reformat reply to this treed cause my fingers.
and I will finish for you.
5. and the my best advice READ READ READ READ
your here that's farther than most (THUMBS UP TO YOU)
