i have a fileserver i built a while back and the psu died. I got an antec true power trio 650 but it was DOA. I returned it and the new one seems to be doa also so i'm looking for something else.

i used the calculator but its telling me to use a 257watt psu which cannot be right. here is brief rundown of the specs.

amd xp2700
ecs generic mobo
2x512mb pc3200
2x250gb pata hard drives (in raid setup for mirroring using sata adapters)
3x160gb pata hard drives( 1 system drive other 2 in raid0)
currently has a really old pci all in wonder video card but i'll be dropping a bfg 6800NU agp in to replace it soon
2x80mm case fans
drd-rw drive

i need a good reliable psu for this thing with the potential to maybe add more hard drives+ram at a later time.

i was really disappointed with both antec psu's being bad out of the box.

I'll be going out tomorrow to buy the new psu and was hoping for some quick recommendations.

any help is appreciated

thanks,

It's really a shame how Antec PSUs have gone downhill over the past year or so. I used to use them exclusively in all my builds but dropped them right after the introduction of the Trio series and a bout of 4 DOA/Exploding units in a row.

Take a look around Jonnyguru's site. He has quite a few excellent reviews which should help you make an informed decision. Make sure to read the review on the Sunbeamtech NUUO 550.

well it turns out that the second truepower trio does in fact work. i was testing it with my normal old psu tester and it having never failed me before was telling me that the psu was bad, but just to be sure i hoked it up to the comp and it powered up just fine. guess its time to get a new psu tester.

it was still a huge pain that the first one died. drove 2hours (each way)to the frys in sacramento to get it and then had to drive back yesterday to exchange it. i'm glad this one turned out to work cuz i was loking at spending another 4 hours on the road and another $30 in gas just to exchange it. the psu itself cost $160 so all in all i payed about $200 for a psu i should have just gotten locally. oh well, ya live ya learn.
