I'm building a C2D system for my daughter and newegg dropped the Tagen power supply I picked.

Any good recommendations for an equivalent ~500W single 12v rail replacement?

I don't want something that's flaky and will eventually take out the whole system.

If you dont have a budget the corsair 520W modular is a great unit. So are the OCZ power/gamestream units.
too much ripple on the gamextremes. Go with the corsair. Rock solid PSU with great effiency.

My powerstream did find powering my rig which was similar to the one your powering. It was a 600W and dual rail, but it doesn't really matter.

Well if I get even close to $150, I might as well just spring for the PC Power and Cooling 610 EPS unit.

IMHO, I'd actually put all these above the PCPC 610. One thing to note though, the Silverstone is a no frills server unit, and from what I understand, is not that quiet. The Zippy is simply the best in the business, but the "gamer" version that I linked to is a slightly more mainstream-ready version. Its noise should be acceptable, but probably isn't quiet either. The Sparkle is the only one with independent rail regulation out of the three, but is arguably a teensy notch below the other two in regards to build quality. The only thing that makes me slightly nervous is that Fortrons have declined quite dramatically over the past years, and while the Sparkles probably haven't, who knows. All three of these are wonderful units though, just about the best out there, and all have beefy +12v rails rated in between 35 and 40A.

I personally have the Sparkle myself (a couple years old as far as know, bought off a fellow forum member), and I can vouch for it having no trouble powering a 4 GHz+ Conroe and a 5 GHz+ Prescott. The Silverstone is very popular, and the Zippy, while new, probably will be soon enough as well.

My two cents:

There seems to be some questiob according to Jonny Guru's technical testing about whether it's really a single rail or double rail or whatever. Either way he rates it highly and it's close to your price range at ZZF if you like modular.

It's a good unit, but the build quality does not match the units I listed. But it certainly is much more "mainstream friendly" with the 120mm fan and modular design.

It is a single rail, but it won't be able to handle the same load as the above...but its also a great PSU, no doubt.

I'm liking that Sparkle unit.

I might buy two so I can also get my Iwill DH800 running again.

If modular is something you're looking for the Corsair is a good option. But, if you can live with wires, the Enhance ENP-5150GH at $70 is a good option. It won't have any problems with that system.

Guatam,

No question the ones you listed are more robust. If he likes modular like I do now, this one is nice!

go with one of the gautam units especially the first silverstone

and btw ripple cant be measured with "12.16 at load" wether its a dmm or software.

The system listed does not need a single rail PSU, the Enhance unit listed here is what I would recomend for this build.
Anything more would really be overkill IMHO

I've got the Sparkle 550w Gautam listed. Dam rock solid performer imho. Hasn't even blinked since I've had it.

This doesnt have to do with the PSU choice but I just want to comment on the graphics card. Beware of Sapphire. I just had the worst RMA experience with their company, if you could even call it a company. I've learned now to always pick the big names, even if it is a bit more expensive. All this hassle wasn't worth the little bit of money I saved.

Thanx for the tip.

What model was it?

What happened to the card?

What did Sapphire do/not do?

BTW This is the only model of X1950GT listed at Newegg and it spanks the GF7600GT for only $15 more.

On second thought, I'm beginning to think I'd be comfier with you going for the Silverstone, its only 2 bucks more.

I know its possibly the stupidest reason possible, but that newegg review on the Sparkle just gave me the jitters. And now that I think about it, the very occasional thread does crop up now and then on the forums about Fortron/Sparkle failing...very occasionally but still.

Yeah... but then again one can find such threads for any OEM on the market, including Zippy.

Personally, I still consider the FSP550PLG-SLI the best FSP unit they make. However, it's an old design that's only getting older - it's not too efficient or quiet. The Silverstone ST56ZF is a better supply for both build quality and silence, though the FSP does have one small advantage in that it is independantly regulated.

For the rig in question, the Enhance mentioned by MVC is more than enough however. Single 12v is not necessary.
