I just got a P5B Deluxe today. Tried to run it without anything (no cpu, no gpu, no ram). The power supply is connected properly 24 pin and 4 pin. The power supply works (paper clip in green and black). Here's what happens:

The Mobo blue LED turns on when there is power. It turns red when i short the power and ground. After 3-5 seconds, the red goes back to blue. This happend when all the components were installed and as I uninstalled each component, the mobo would not post and the red LED would only show up for like 3-5 seconds.

Is this a faulty MOBO? or can it be power supply? (I stuck paper clips into the PSU and the fan spun indefinately).

So you are trying to run the MB without ANY components? It will not start without a minimum of CPU and RAM
And if you want to see board show some stuff on the monitor you have to have grpahic card in.

That board may not work with certain types of memory without possible bios update.

I don't want the board to show anything, or even post. I just want it to sustain the red LED and stop going to the blue LED after 5 seconds of connecting the PSU. :( (Red LED = mobo is active, blue = not active) I pulled the cpu because i thought it was overheating, but its still turning off after 5 sec of power.

I don't know what the board will do without the CPU and ram installed.

When you had these items in the board and it was not posting did you move the jumper to clear cmos? Try it with only one stick of ram and see what happens.

It just won't happen without the CPU and RAM

Is there a way to identify the source of the problem? I don't have spare parts lying around.. unfortunately.

Yes, a minimum of a CPU, ram and video card are needed to do anything. But I wouldn't screw with it or you could void the warranty. The Asus RMA process is bad enough by itself without adding something else to make it worse. Take my word on that. just check my posts. I recommend anybody doing a RMA take digital photos of their board before sending it in for RMA.
