in windows xp, i have made a connection through 2 computers using the xp network wizard. the host computer is the main computer and the computer needs to stay on so that the other computer can use the internet. problem is when i go thru the network wizard, it keeps selecting the second bullet point which says that the host computer is connecting thru a residential gateway, whcih is no because its connected directly to the internet. ne one have any ideas?? also the other computer cannot access the internet

are you using a crossover cable? that sounds like it might be the source of your problems because the cable "flips" the trasceiver and receiver lines between the two computers so that they can "talk" to each other.

yes i am using a cross over cable, have been running my network like this for 3 years and have neva had a problem till recently. it seems like the host computer (the on i'm on now) keeps thinking that it connects to the internet through another computer, which is doesnt. i think this is affecting the network and i am not able to change it.

Are you connecting to a broadband connection? (E.G. Cable, DSL)

The NIC that goes to the other computer must have an IP of 192.168.0.1 subnet of 255.255.255.0.

The second computer could then be set to any IP of 192.168.0.* with the same subnet. This second computer would then use the gateway of 192.168.0.1. The DNS could be the same 192.168.0.1.

The NIC that goes to your broadband should just be set to DHCP.

Hope that helps some. I would be hard pressed to say why you are having that problem. Firewall maybe? Corrupt file on the OS?

yeh looks like it was a corrupt file in the os. in the end i just decided to format my computer and started from scratch. atm all seems to be running well. strange thing is though, this is the 1st time that this has ever happened to me before. u reckon it could be the network cable?? could it be damaged? i have it running through the loft and the temperatures vary alot. in winter, its absolutely freezing up there, and in summer its absolutely boiling. the reason for running the cables through the loft is becuase the two rooms where the computers are, are at a fair distance apart, and mum wouldnt be happing seeing that bright yellow cable  round the house. oh well, ne ways thx guys for helping, got it sorted out in the end :attn:
