Hey guys, it has been a very long time since i built my last computer(as you could see in my sig) and i feel it's time for an upgrade. I have been out of the loop as far as what a good mobo/cpu/mem combo is these days, so i was wondering if you could help.

My price range is 800-1000 total for the following:
CPU
Mobo
Memory(Not sure on 2 or 4gigs, w.e you think would be better)
PSU
Video Card(Already have my mind set on a 8800)

I need a setup which can OC very well, and i plan on going the intel route this time around, since i hear they are pretty much ahead of the game these days. Also this will be a gaming rig.

I plan to buy all my parts off newegg, so any direct links would be a great deal of help.

Thank you very much!

This really should be in general hardware but anyways. A solid base would be

E8400
Asus P5K-E
2x2GB G.Skill 800Mhz
Corcsair 520HX
Your 8800 of choice
Tuniq Tower sinceb newegg doesn't sell the TR 120 extreme
Arctic Silver 5
Vista 64
The case of your choice.

You would be able to save a good bit of money if you open yourself to other e-tailers.

If you don't want to wait for the E8400 to come back in stock the Q6600 woud be a fine substitute.

I am on my phone so I am unable to give you any direct links but everything should be easy enough to locate.

Hey thank you for the reply. I have been doing a ton of research and have come up with the following:

I was looking at the Q6600 and was pretty interested in them, THe E8400 looks pretty solid also for a duel core. Only thing is, is i don't plan on upgrading anytime soon, so i was leaning towards the Q6600. Thoughts??
I def want a P35 board, i am looking at the following:

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS4 Rev. 2.0:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128064

ASUS P5K PREMIUM/WIFI-AP:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131190

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128059

Not sure which to pick from. o_O

As for memory, why 2x2g sticks and not 4x1g sticks? Also are the gskill sticks d9?

Out of those I would go with the Asus because of the BIOS. I personally do not like Gigabytes BIOS. Just a personal thing, I know others have no problems with them. I am currently running an Asus and overall it has treated me well. Many here have had success with those Gigabyte boards as well. Just do some reading and see which would suite you better.

The reason for the 2x2Gb is two things. One it leaves room for future expansion. The other is that you will typically have less issues OCing when only using two sticks. I am currently using four and have not had any issues. I can run 500Mhz FSB without a problem. However others have had issues when filling all four slots. If I was starting from scratch I would go the 2X2Gb route so I could add more later if needed.

Since you do not plan on upgrading for a while definately go with the quad. It will give you much more longevity out of the system. You will reap even more benefits when software developers start taking advantage of the extra cores.

I love my Premium as well, but I hear the Foxconn MARS is the best board for quads if you can find it.

None of the 2x2GB kits are D9. You'll have to go 4x1GB to get that. Here's a list that'll tell you which sticks have which kind of memory chips. I know these are D9, but they are too expensive...wait for a MIR. I think these are D9 as well, and they have the rebate going right now.

If you decide to go w/ the 2x2GB then get something rated a little higher (DDR2-1066), b/c the 2GB sticks don't tend to OC as well. However, I just saw some 2GB sticks in the Memory sub-forum doing 600MHz (DDR2-1200 speeds), so you might want to look into that.

Definitely go w/ the TR U120E...even if you have to venture from the egg.

Get some MX-2 unless you already have some good TIM.

Corsair has some well rated PSU's. Any of them will do depending if you want it to modular or not. Here's a recommended list from johnny guru.

Which 8800 are you considering? There are a lot of them, and the naming scheme is all screwed up. Go for the 8800GTS-512. There are some awesome deals on it as of late. Watch the cyperdeals sub-forum. They had a GTS-512 in there the other day for $225 AR.

Thanks for the info everyone, it's really putting me back on track as to what i want in my next system.

Now with the Team Xtreem kit that you linked me, i would be able to buy two kits and run all 4 of them no problem right? Or would it be better off just buying a 4x1gb kit?

Also let me see if i understand this correctly, the Q6600 does 266x9 and the Team Xtreem is rated at 400fsb at stock timings/voltage. So this pretty much means i have around 133fsb of overclock before passing rated memory speeds?

I am guessing that the MX-2 stuff is the top of the line stuff to go with these days huh, not so much AS5 anymore?

I was looking at this EVGA 8800GTS 512:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130312
But ill be on the lookout for any nice deals like ya said. :)

Thanks!

i have the ds3p AND ITS IS THE BEST BOARED EVER!!!!! and the DS4 is even better + gigabyte boards are easy 2 use and come with good utilitires and overclock very well

CPU - E8400 if you can find one, can be had for ~$225, or a Q6600 GO can be had for ~245-270 if you want a quad.

CPU HSF - Ultra 120

GPU - 8800GTS 512 eVGA(my fav), XFX, BFG all make good boards and like jason said there have been some good deals on those lately, plus the newer boards seem to ship with samsung memory that OCs better unlike the old qimonda chips.

PSU - Corsair HX (modular) series are rock solid PSUs, I've build 7 systems using the 520/620 models and some of the systems have been running for over a year now with no signs of rails going weaker.

MB - P5K-premium is a good board, I use it myself, but it seems to have RAID issues with a lot of HD setups. Gigabyte GS-P35 DS3L I've heard good things about, and it is very cheap, so could be a good option is you're hurting for cash in another department.

CPU- E8400 or E3110 - $229-$279(Same chip the 3110 is cheaper currently)
Mobo- ASUS P5E or Maximus Formula - $239-$289
Memory- Grab some OCZ Platinum PC8500 2gigs - $110
PSU- Antec or Enermax 700+watts - $200
Video Card- 8800's are outdated, grab a 3870x2 - $450

If your just a hardcore nvidia fan, you may want a SLI board... in that realm go with EVGA 780i or the Striker Formula.

The RAM should be fine either way. I had a 2x1GB kit of Ballistix, and then got another kit a few months later...no issues.

You are correct about the memory OC. You can raise the FSB to 400 and you will only then be running that RAM at it's rated speed (assuming 1:1). You'll have lots of headroom as well, b/c those sticks should be good to 550-600MHz (DDR2-1100-1200 speeds).

MX-2 is my favorite, but I've only tried AS5 and MX-2.

That's the gfx card I have...very nice. And w/ eVGA you can step-up in the next 90 days if you feel the need.

i have the ds3p AND ITS IS THE BEST BOARED EVER!!!!! and the DS4 is even better + gigabyte boards are easy 2 use and come with good utilitires and overclock very well

Compared to what? I had the DS3R briefly, and my buddy has the DS3P. They are good boards, but I wouldn't consider them the best. They are very lacking in BIOS options, and I don't care for the +0.1, +0.2, etc options & the need to press cntl-f1 to get to the good stuff.

I can't comment on the utilities b/c I haven't used any MoBo utilities. I stick w/ the BIOS.

However, for a novice they can be a better choice b/c they don't bombard the user w/ too many options. But, if you want to go to the next level, I hold onto my earlier recommendations.
