Need to save the data on disk

In all the times I've reinstalled Windows XP I've never kept anything for one reason or another but this time I need to. I have a pc for a friend that needs to keep all the current programs and data, will that stay with the repair? If not which install method should I use. Keeping in mind I can't use th cd-rom past BIOS because for some reason "Windows has loaded the drivers for the device but can't find it". I can start the Windows install from the cd at boot but not in windows. Any help?

if you repair all your old data and programs will be there but the programs might not work. I would reccomend making another partition and installing windows on it and just leave the old one there so that if he needs anything its right there. As long as his HDD isn't small that will work well.
