Need to recover data from a halfway compressed FAT partition

A guy brought his computer to me and said he had defrageed then started to compress his hardrive and the computer crashed. Now the partion is pretty much corrupt and I need to recover the data for him and hopefully the os because its a 486 and I don't have windows 95. I have the harddrive in my computer now and am trying to find good software to help me out. Also, windows will no let me give it a drive letter. I'm using XP Pro.

Found some software, EasyRecovery, it found all the files fine and they are being copied to my harddrive as we speak. The software is very easy and seems quite powerful.
