New 9800 pro not working...scrambled screen from power on (pics)

I have an asus p4p800/ 2.8c

Whats happening is when i install my 'new to me' refurb ati 9800 pro, from the moment i turn it on, even in bois etc... the screen is unreadably scrabled.
Bad card? doubtful this is not the first time.
Back 8 months ago, i bought a 9600 xt, same thing, RMAed for 9700 pro, same thing, RMAed for a 9600 pro, same thing... wtf. All of these were refurbs? i dont remeber how i fixed it but i thought on the last one it involved erasing all the drivers... but dont quote me there.

I have tried uninstalling all drivers, installing correct drivers, same thing every time.
What could it be?
does newegg.com never test any of these?

While I'm sure that there are some folks that RMA something that works, my experience has been refurb items are RMA's that get stuck back on the shelf. I always assume refurbs are RMA'd broke stuff.

the last time i had bad screen like that,it was a volt mod gone bad.The card ended up against the wall.I would say send it back
I would say there is something wrong with the internals..

later tweaker

Yep, seen that before, Gut's are fried. Someone let it get too hot more than likely.

what i dont get is newegg claims to test them all before they go out. Well i build computers for others and its never happened with a new card, just there refurbs.

I believe your mistaken, its up to the manufacturer to verify the device.

"Newegg.com does not test any product, including refurbished items. Refurbished components are therefore only tested by the original manufacturer. Due to the varying quality of manufacturer testing, YOU ARE TAKING A RISK BUYING REFURBISHED PRODUCTS. Refurbished items are OPEN BOX products that contain components that have previously been owned by other clients and returned to Newegg.com. These products are sold considerably under cost. "

BOOYA :D

Had a brand new 9800xt from Best Buy that looked just like that. Started slow, a few checker board squares after a hour or so. Let it cool off then was ok for a day or two. Then got worse and worse till it looked just like that pic all the time. Since I had not moded it and was using the stock cooler, I took it back to Best Buy and traded it for a 6800GT, witch didn't work out of the box. LOL so called BFG and thay overnight me a new one. I also fried a x800 doing the vdimm mod (pots were all the way closed ensted of all the way open) and it looks that way now, had to eat that one.

Agreed , like i said it looks like a bad flash ... someone prolly tried to flash it to a xt and gave it a 128mb bios or somthing :D

Yup, I think Hexen's onto something. When I was messing with memory timings on my 9800np, some of my own modded bioses made my screen look a lot like that.

"Considerably" under cost. That is a LAUGH. Does anyone here remember when there was FREE FEDEX Saver shipping at Newegg??? Does anyone here remember when Neweggs prices were competitive, and, often LOWER than the competition????

Let's get back to "considerably" under cost, as they define their pricing of refurbs.....

Refurbished Gigabyte Radeon X800XT - OEM Barebone $399.60
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-125-149R&depa=0

Sapphire ATI Radeon X800XT - OEM Bulk $459.00
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-423&depa=0

Now...... there is a $59.40 between the two cards: one a refurb, the other is not - both OEM. Considerably under cost??? Don't think so.

Don't mind me, I am just a little upset with Newegg as of late. They do so much business and have so many loyal repeat customers, this is just like a slap in the face. Where the hell did the FREE FEDEX Saver shipping go??? The only way they pass savings on these days with shipping is with the refrubs. You buy a REFURB video card you pay one dollar for shippng. You buy a regular one, you pay 6 bucks.

Didn't mean to hijack. Anyhow, with respect to original poster - yeah, I'd avoid refurbs in the future. Seem to be a have for people's overclocking misadventures.

I agree man. I've used newegg for 3 years now. Built about 20 computers, and messed with mine plenty. always had free shipping and low price.
But in the past year or so they have been slackin. I went on pricewatch for poop and gigles and found a intel p4 2.8c elsewhere for $50 less then newegg.com...wtf, both were new OEM.

since then i gotta start shopping around again.

Update, i RMAed it back to newegg for a replacement. so im computerless for the next 2 weeks.

Scroatdog: Some of us cant afford new stuff :) specially when i wasn't expecting to have to replace my 9600 pro prematurely. grrrr. But $130 vs $249 aint bad for a refurbed 9800pro

my 9800pro looked exactly like that after I fried the memory in a benchmarking/overvolt accident (putting 5v through the mem!).

bt

Your core is FRIED like an omlit my freind 9500 is starting to do it at random somtimes...RMA it or is it s refurb? i have had good luck with my 9800 refurb before i kinda ripped off a ram chip....or 2....

I used a screw drive that was magnetic to put a VF700 on a 9800pro and I got a screan that looked just like that. :bang head In the end I traded it in for a new one----That's why when my X800Pro PCI-E(for my LGA system I'm building) comes Tuesday, I'm replacing the stock cooling with a VF700-Cu and that's it, no volt mods, no nothing. Just OC a lil bit......
