Hi All, The rig in my sig finally died after almost 9 years so need to build somthing new. I haven't built in a few years and need some advise. I don't do a lot of gaming. I picked the following to start. I will use my old case and recently installed a new 500 watt power supply. How does this sound and am open to suggestions. There are so many components now that is is hard to chose. Thanks Steve

ASUS P8z68-vle mb
Sapphire 100314-3l 6870 video
G skill ripjaws 8 gig 2x4
WD 500gig 7200 sata 6
Intel I7-2600 3.4
Windows 7 home premium.

Thanks for the input guys. I have always used intel cpus and asus boards so will stick with that. I will get a better cooler and take another look at the different cpus. Thanks

I'm not one for brand loyalty, I think it just needlessly limits options. If you research all the possible solutions and determine that Intel is the way to go for your needs, then by all means do it. Don't rule out the APUs just by the fact that they're made by AMD.

But for $25 more, he can get the Cooler Master v6 gt, the v6 gt look a lot better than the CM hyper 212

If he's reusing his old case, I'm pretty sure looks are the last thing he cares about. The Hyper212 series also murders the V6GT in terms of price/performance.

Thanks for the tips guys. On another note the current dead system has a failed cpu test no screen. I switched out a known good 3.0 p4 cpu with same results, removed cpu and message was no cpu installed, rest cmos, tried resetting all the plugs, removed and reinstalled ram, loosened the cpu fan all with same results. I have another board of the same kind. If it were a bad mb would everthing work the same?? Still probably going to build but it bugs me that I can't get to the root problem. Thanks

If you really want to spend money on your cpu cooler go for the thermalright truespirit 140 or if you really want a price performance got with the hyper 212. For your cpu and mobo i would wait for ivy bridge to drop. Also what type of gaming are you doing what is your budget what type of monitor are you using? What games are you playing?

Still working on this build. I guess I don't do any intense gaming, Mostly internet browsing, photo storage and would like to use this to host my web site as my old server is down. My budget with mb,cpu, ram, video card, hard drive and operating system for around $800. I will be using the case 500 watt power supply and the monitor in my sig. Thanks

If you want to use that Thermaltake PurePower Silent in your sig, I wouldn't. A bit of googling indicates that's a pretty bad PSU, only 18A on the 12V rail. That's something like half the output. Case and Monitor are fine though.

This is probably way overkill for your needs, but it's the best machine you'll get with $800. 120GB SSD and 1TB storage is most of the extra cost, but it gives you the space you want with blazing speed.

I one up this build, I would have put together something pretty similar.

When you say you don't do any intense gaming... Do you mean not very much or not at all?

Nice component list there Knufire. I'll add a vote of confidence on that one.

Advice.

Looks good, though if you plan on overclocking, you need the "K" version of that CPU. As posted, you do not have hte 2600K.

I also second getting rid of that PSU. 18A 12v rail and 500W is LOW.

That is a very good start, you may also want to buy an after market cooler like the Cooler Master v6 GT for $45 to keep your case cool :)

That cooler is MEH at best. And also, he's keeping the CPU cool, not the case. In fact, a better cooler should warm the case up a bit as it takes heat away from the CPU.

Yeah, for $25 more, he can get a cooler that is no better in performance.

Can't go past a Noctua NH-D14, though you then have to worry about whether it'll fit the case. The CM Hyper 212 EVO is the ebst choice more most users and can't be beat in price/performance. Who cares about how a cooler looks?

I have not been playing any games latley. I used to play quake a lot (I know the game is real old). I am in the middle of a frame off on a 70 Olds Vista Cruiser I am doing so no time right now. I just want to be able to in the fall/winter if I have time. If this machine had not quit now I would not be doing a new machine.

I see your point on the power supply and did not relize the difference in the newer models so will get new one. I have never built a AMD machine is it the same as intel?? I may hold off a bit to builld till this car is done but need to do something soon. Thanks for all the help. Steve

Not really any different when putting everything together. The retention mechanism for heatsinks varies a little but about the only thing which varies to any degree is overclocking. If you don't overclock then you'll find it pretty straight forward. I've not really noticed that much has changed. you still have expansion slots, CPU sockets are much the same. All pretty similar to the way things were.
