I'm shopping for a new computer system.
I did some research but I'm still not sure of all the terminology.
My wish list is below. Let me know if I got something wrong or if the components are not compatible or left something out.
Once I nail down the system I'll start shopping for a deal.

Intel pentiun 4 1.8GHZ, 266 mhz front side Bus, L1 (on die) cache, 256k L2 (on chip) cache for total of 384k on chip cache.

ATX tower case w/400 w per supply w/ (3) 5.25" drive bays, (2) 3.5" external, (1) 3.5" internal
256mb DDR memory

20-40GB hard drive (7200 RPM) 10ms access time or less w/2mb buffer

16X DVD-ROM

24x10x40 rewritable Drive

ATX Motherboard with 266mhz BUS, APG 3 PCI, 2 DIMM slots, 1CNR

Video - 32mgb 4X AGP ATi Xpert 2000 Rage, 128 Pro card w/TV OUT

Ports- (1) serial port, (1) parrell port, (1) game port

USB 4 USB ports support up to 127 USB devices

Welcome to the forums :D

You are getting confused. It is the AthlonXP CPU that has a 266MHz FSB and 384k cache, inc 256k L2. The Pentium 4 has trace L1 cache (?) and 512k L2 cache. It uses a 400Mhz Front side bus. Get the AthlonXP - they are faster, cheaper and better. The XP1800+ is plenty fast and not too expensive.

400W is what you need, good choice!

256mb DDR memory

PC2100 is OK, but PC2400 or PC2700 will be better for overclocking. What speed were you planning on getting?

20-40GB hard drive (7200 RPM) 10ms access time or less w/2mb buffer

16X DVD-ROM

24x10x40 rewritable Drive

Looks good

The mobo - what is the exact manufacturer and model?
The video card looks okay, but if you are going to be doing gaming a lot, get a GeForce 2/3/4 or a Radeon.

Ports- (1) serial port, (1) parrell port, (1) game port

USB 4 USB ports support up to 127 USB devices

All standard stuff there.

Good Luck with the system, feel free to ask any questions at the forums!

EDIT: My spelling is awful  (edited for typos)

hmmm well I would narrow down a specific motherboard and then post here for people's opinions on it. I would recommend getting a Mobo with at 5 pci slots, which seems to be the standard right now for ATX mobos.

If you pick up a mobo with only 3 pci you may find yourself running out of slots later on: i'm currently using 3 of 5 pci slots on mine: USB port card, Soundcard, and NIC card. anyways, the more PCI slots, the more expandability you'll have.

also, you can get a good video card like the radeon 7500 for like 80 bucks right now, spend a few extra bucks for something like this instead of a 32mb card. If you can spare it, pick up a geforce 3 ti200 or radeon 8500, i think they're both in the 130-150 dollar range right now.

I think; like everyone has said; you need to nail down the mobo issue. I did see however that you could buy the retail boxed ATI Devil Monster II Radeon 8500 with 128MB of DDR on board for $179.99 at www.buyaib.com. If you have the money and for this but not for a GF4, IMHO it would be a very good video card.

Welcome to the BOARDS!!! :) :) :)

Okay guys, this is great!
DAvid suggests:
AMD Athlon 1800+ CPU
PC2700 memory
epox 8kHA+ MOBO
Geforce3 video

H20link agrees with the Geforce3 and suggests a mobo w/5 pci
(does the epox 8KHA+ have 5 PCI?)

I read on another thread that Malakai also likes the epox 8KHA+ as well as the Soyo Dragon+

Deadlord79 suggests Devil MonsterII (any comments here?)

I'm leaning toward the epox 8KHA+
PC2700 memory
AMD 1800+ CPU
Geforce3 video

How about the case? Any other suggestions?

On the case, you could go here: www.casedepot.com <-- They are rather pricey, but have a great selection to choose from. You could always build one yourself too. I'm sure the guys will come up with some other really great and cheap sites, but go to the above link and look around to give yourself a better idea of what you need and like and go from there. You can always go to www.pricewatch.com and click on cases to find some other sites for cases.

Decide on a motherboard first and go from there.

Yes, I think the Epox board has 5 PCI slots. None of the useless AMR and CNR slots :D

For the case, get one with a 350W or 400W PSU. Go for at least a Midi tower. A full tower is the best as it will be roomier and easier to work on.
