ok so whats good now?

avg used to be good, it works well at finding junk but what set it apart from others in the past was it didnt take up TONS of resources and slow the computer way down, now its just like any other antivirus software, way to big, way to slow and a drain on a system.

so who has experence with something else free and doesent sap a ton of system resources?

I still prefer and recommend Avira. If you need something idiot proof, for your grandmom or something, MSE.

Avira 9.0 here and AVG (email). Be advised the free Avira version doesn't do email. I like Avira better otherwise, fewer resources needed.

not doing e-mail is fine, every one uses web based mail so if its on the net till they open the message.

if you are looking for outright best definitions, Avira is the current tops.

If you are looking for "install and forget it's there cause it never bothers you ever again", then Microsoft Security Essentials.

Hmmm, I was just about to start a thread on this subject. Apparently AVG has been becoming very naggy, lately. First it was ads, last year, now It's saying I only have 2 days left and it's nagging me to buy the retail version with an unclosable window.

Seriously, F them.

I'll try that Avira.

You can install it MSE on Windows XP as well, as long as it's the 32 bit version.

As far as I can find and tell from my experiments, MSE will not install/work on XP64 bit or Windows Server.

I used to use AVG which wasn't bad, but decided to test drive Avira. What AVG missed Avira found. Looks like I got me a new AV

Avira + Spybot S&D + Malwarebytes FTW.

AVG is bloated compared to Avira and doesnt catch as many things as Avira.

Earthdog - I dont' think anyone here can argue with the efficacy of the programs too much, but as for their usage in real life, some work better in certain situations than others.

MSE is a perfect set-and-forget Antiviral/Anti-Malware. Unless they go out of their way to break it like say, uninstalling it, the better idiot can't break it.

I edited my post (prior to yours above). I was thinking of a different program. ;)

I use Avast and installed it on my mothers system as well. It does everything that I could want a AV program to do. The only thing that I have a issue with is that the program can tend to use a decent amount of system processes when all the "bells and whistles" are enabled (or, a large amount of resources to me, because of my slow system).

TF,

I am not familiar with using MSE. What's the difference from Windows Defender? If you use MSE, do you uninstall any other AV program you are using?

Defender gets disabled when you install MSE. MSE is A/V as well as anti malware. You also uninstall any other A/V as you normally would(excepting setups for on demand scan only).

casting ressurection on thread:

Avira was just as bad as AVG, annoying pop ups and the usual bloat.

trying MSE since i just installed 7 pro a few weeks ago
