New HS fan....hot, too hot!

so I got this

And my temps rose above 50!!! =(

WTF? And to make matters worse my old 60mm fan broke when I was taking it off.

Is that fan crap? The adapter crap? Im thinking of getting longer bolts and raising the fan off the HS Adapter a few inches.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: Also, if you are going to have a duct, should you have same speed/size fans on both ends?

I would have to say the fan is the problem. The sensor on it probably isn't getting a good reading and is spinning slower than it should. You might want to get a new fan without a sensor on it. I don't know how to get it to spin at full speed. I believe other members know how to mod it. Make sure if you get a new fan that the CFM's are higher than your 60 mm fan.
 
I think the sensor is a variable (temperature) resistor. Please someone confirm it. If I am right and if the sensor is the problem try shorting his legs and see if the fan goes faster.
Also check heatsink contact with the chip.
 
I read somewhere that someone else had that fan, and they yanked the clip out to make it always run full speed. But I cant tell if its running full now or not after I did that. Im gonna just get a non variable fan I guess. Any suggestions on a good 80mm CPU fan for HS?
 
The Sunon 50 cfm fan is a good one thats the one I have now. Panaflo, Delta, and YS tech are also good ones. Of course the 80 cfm Deltas would be the best if you can stand the noise. lol

What I mean with shorting his legs is make them electrically the same tension. Any peace of metal touching both legs will do.
 
Im trying to go quieter, which is why I switched to 80mm...

"Yanked it out" I mean I, well, just yanked the little thing out! Id imagine in hinesight that wasnt the best thing to do, but someone else mentioned they did it lol. Oh well. Mabye I can solder the legs together and then solder it back on?

I think Im going to grab the Panaflo H1A 39cfm 32db...

Most of those thermal fans spin really slow at normal temp. They really don't start to move until the temp gets really hot. Try taking the fan off and running just the fan, I bet it doesn't move much. Then take a match and get it failry close to the thermal sensor, not too close to burn it up but close enough it should feel some heat. If nothing happens, doesn't spin any faster than that thermal sensor is not working. If it spins up then it is working but it requires a bit of heat to get it going. If you are really wanting a good mod. Cur the thermoristor off, leave enough on the fan so that you could solder some wires to the therminals, find out what resistance the thermristor is rated at, using a multimeter works best, and solder in a small potentiometer on the other end of the wires. Wham-o, instant adjustable fan. This is how the Enermax fans are done, as well as several other brands. If you need more help with it just let me know. i've done the mod with several JMC fans and they are work fine and I can tune them all to how I like.
 
If I already snapped off the lil sensor (I know, not smart) is it too late to wire up a small potentiometer to it? Or even something to make it spin full speed would be fine to me. If I use a potentiometer would I need to know the resistance of the sensor? I dont have multi meter just yet, I know I need to get one soon.

If you want to make it work full speed all the time just solder the remaining wires (if any). That red thing is what you should do. You don't need the sensor to run it full speed. If you want to control the speed you can use the mod by custoswashere.
 
i think its the adapter that is crap. the "ridges" on the edge of the adapter are flat which somehow pushes air back out the back of the fan (i can feel it on mine). so somehow if you sanded the ridges to slant towards the heatsink you might get better results.
 
My volcano 7 is sorta the same..I got into mod mood and took the diode off and tried to twist the wires together to short them out so it would run at full rpm....i broke the wires off at the solder point by accident..a buddy of mine soldered the two points and it runs at full rpm's. But this is a Tt volcano 7 so I dont know how well you can get at those points to add a drop of solder...I assume that will work to get your fan spinning...better get another opinion or maybe someone can back me up on this just as a final confirmation for Nyrlath.
The heat sensor on these fans is a good idea but the diode needs to be where it is hot...not neawr our ambient air. Many of us have extra fans blowing and thus our ambient air is cool..so if any of you fan companies are reading this...PUT THE DIODE NEAR THE CPU!!! Create a better "smart Fan" for us all...or maybe one of you can take an existing smart fan and mod it so the temperature gauge reached the cpu. Even if you take the Volcano 7 diode and strech the wires so it reaches the heatsink it still does not kick into high rpm's thus making it a useless fan that we probably paid extra for!!!!
 
For the sensor to work the fan should be installed sucking air from the CPU instead of blowing to it. If it pushes air to the CPU the air will be cooler than it would be if it were pulled from the CPU.

I'll make this short,

To get the fan spinning at max speed take some needlenose pliers and grab the bulb probe.

Then twist so the wires come together, dont worry if the bulb breaks off.

If you accidently removed the bulb or the wires, take a soldering iron and bridge the two poles together, you can use a cut piece of a paperclip if need be.

It will spin at max speed
 
Thanks for the help guys, its much appreciated. Im going to try and use it as my HS fan for now, until my new fan arrives.

As far as the adapter goes I did remove one whole ridge, and will probably do as you mentioned and slant it more. I also found some longer bolts to use to raise the fan up. Then I can shroud it. I just hope the fan will be 'stable' while spinning if its setup like that.
