new modem has hardware failure

my friend got a new modem, archtek 5634pcw. the drivers on the cd didnt work so i d/l new ones, but i get data error and it wont continue installing. if i try to get online i get a code 692 or harware failure. what it wrong, the drivers, win xp, or the modem?

Have you tried moving the modem to another PCI slot. It sounds like you could be having IRQ conflicts. Thats the first thing I try when installing any new PCI card if it's not working correctly. Most of the time the problem is solved by moving it to another slot.
