I’m finally ready to move up to 1440p. I watched a Monitors Unboxed video but they recommended OLED monitors. I’ve read that OLED still has problems with burn in, and I’d like to use the monitor for 5 to 8 years. I’d like to stay away from from OLED for that reason. I don’t want to have to replace the monitor in three or four years because of burn in.

I’m looking at 1440 because I watched another video with a review of the 7900 xt and 4K performance was bad. 1440 was pretty good. The Monitors Unboxed video recommended 360 hz. They said it was great for competitive and single player gaming. I’m not looking for competitive gaming, but I’m not sure what refresh rate to go with. Can a 7900 xt do 360 hz? Or should I stick with a 144 or 165? With holiday sales coming up in the US, now is a good time to look I think.

What are other people using with a 7900 xt?

7900xt can probably hit 360 fps, but in old games or maybe CS2. I'd stick with 165.
Thanks EarthDog. Another question. Would you guys recommend HDR for mixed use? I game, watch movies and visit websites mostly. I’m trying to decide if I should go for an HDR monitor or not.

Don't cheap out and grab anything that says HDR400, they're not worth it.
Back in 2020-21 most mid-range monitors weren't bright enough to properly implement HDR, so it really wasn't worth spending anything extra for it. Things have hopefully/might have changed over the past few years, so check some current reviews & see what they are saying now.

I’ve read that. I am looking for HDR600 or 1000. Unfortunately, a lot of the reviews I’m seeing are OLED monitors. I’ve only seen three so far that are not OLED and have HDR. One from AOC, one fromKTC and one from Cooler Master. The KTC is ultrawide which I’m not looking for.

They have not, monitors with less than HDR1000 certification still blow monkey marbles.

So few things to note. 360hz is generally massive overkill unless your a professional esports gamer. Anything over 120 is going to be great for day to day use.

OLED has improved greatly so as long as your not turning on your monitor and then turning it off 8 years later you should be fine with current tech. OLED also provides great HDR support which is a big plus. Quantum Dots can improve things even more.

7900xt @ 1440p vs 4k(2160p) this totally depends on the game, if you are a AAA day one gamer then yeah 1440 will probably be the safer bet, but if you play games from the last 3 years or older frequently then you can probably go 4k.

When it comes to the Perfect monitor, I dont think it exists (at least for me yet).

https://www.asus.com/us/displays-desktops/monitors/proart/proart-display-pa32ucxr/techspec/ I love all the specs on this except the 60hz, at 120hz it would be near perfect.

https://rog.asus.com/us/monitors/32-to-34-inches/rog-swift-pg32uqxr/ This one has the brightness but its IPS with only 500 local dimming zones.

I am very color space sensitive so displays with poor calibration bother me, and its the same with poorly rendered HDR. Frequency im less sensitive to which is why 120hz is my baseline for my next monitor.

GL let us know what you narrow the list to.

Had no idea HDR600 existed, but as an HDR400 owner I can safely caution that you need a lot more than 50% extra brightness to watch/play things without the need of an extra dark man cave (some like it, but, you know, not ideal unless the wife is in a good mood 😉). Scrap HDR600, go for HDR1000 if you got the cash 👍

Thanks for the tip. I’ll look for HDR1000.

I’ve watched a lot of videos on monitors. I can’t decide. I have a basic 1080p 60 Hz AOC monitor now that works. I am looking at brands I had heard of (ASUS, Samsung, AOC, MSI, LG)

The problem with ASUS is you pay a lot for the brand name. If Black Friday sales are good, I would consider ASUS. Samsung has some great monitors from reviews I’ve seen, but I don’t want a curved monitor and most of theirs are curved.

I’m staying away from OLED to avoid burn in. I’m looking at mini LED with HDR. I’m looking to spend 500 to 600 dollars (I’d like to spend less than 700…I could do 650). Any recommendations for monitors if they hit those prices for Black Friday? I understand they may not be there yet (Newegg Black Friday starts tomorrow I think), but recommendations would be appreciated. I’m thinking, based on Earthdog’s suggestion, a 165 or 180 Hz refresh.

I’ve seen some videos for monitors from KTC and other brands I had never heard of until I watched the video. The reviewer liked the monitor a lot, but I don’t know about buying from a brand I’ve never heard of before.

I've been looking at this one to replace my VA, good reviews but has it's catches, I'm cheap so I usually go as budget as possible, you'll likely get better quality with a little more research - AOC Agon Pro AG276QZD - OLED 27" 1440p HDR10 240hz G-SYNC Compatible - ~£450

Just an FYI, as a person who uses a 48'' lg OLED TV as a monitor for a few years now, I haven't had any sign of an issue. With that said, I specifically bought the "monitor" from Best Buy with their 5 year geek squad warranty which does cover burn in. They're basically the only place I'd but from, at this point, just in case.

After looking at more reviews, I’m leaning toward OLED now. I was concerned about burn in since I use my computer for more than gaming, but the warranties are pretty good. MSI is offering a three year burn in warranty on the MPG271QRX.

Here is an ASUS.

Thr reviews say the glossy screen isn’t great though. Maybe another ASUS monitor?

What do you guys recommend?
