do i HAVE to re-install the os when i change motherboards? i mean, will it boot and everything with the new mobo so i can back up all my stuff or not? i know it is recomended that i re-install, but is it mandatory?

Well, sometimes your OS won't even load. However if it does, your not getting what you paid for. You know notice your performance is wacked, and you'll get lots of errors. Its highly recommended if you get a new motherboard, you fdisk and reformat, and then reinstall the OS.

most the time windows wont load is because the old board drivers wont work with the new board. it is best to reformat, but if you need to back-up some data, you can restore the original windows driver in the device manager and the disk should boot.

I was told that before you replace the board, boot into safe mode and remove/delete all traces of devices in your device manager.
Shut down, replace your mobo and when you boot up, it will detect devices and load all the drivers from windows.
Is that correct? I may have missed something.

haven't heard of it done that way, but it may work. windows may not let you remove some items if their in use though.
