ok kids.... its about that time again

been over 2 years since i last changed to a dual loop watercooled 3.06/canterwood/9800pro setup

want to get my system up to date to take me forward another 2 years or so.

question is, ive been well out the frame for a while and have no idea whats going on

i do alot of video editing in after effects and also mpeg and wmv encoding so i like teh idea of dual core, i think it will help me a lot

shall i wait for these new pressler dual core chips ? i gather they will run quite cool. Will they be terribly expensive ?

which chipset will be the one to go for with them ?

and what about SATA2, etc.. and what sort of RAM should i be looking it (plain old DDR is all i know !)

all help appreciated

cheers

Rich

wait for the presler? you bet. Intel is finally catching up to AMD in the world of CPUs. wait for some performance comparisons and see which comes out on top. the presler should overcome but you never know, the architecture of the A64 is still very impressive but time will tell.

there is no such thing as SATA2. it's SATA 300 (or SATA 3Gbps). SATA2 is a misnomer that some idiot in some marketing department took advantage of and SATA-II can be either SATA 150 or SATA 300. to be honest the throughput of the drive doesn't help too much with performance. the thing that will help most are cache and RPM. if you plan to do heavy sequential IO then go for a 74GB raptor and another larger drive like the DiamondMax10 (16MB Cache up to 300GB) for storage.

for the presler's the platform will certainly be DDR2 and i don't know crap about it as i'm an AMD guy and i haven't had to delve into it yet so i can't help you there. for heavy video editing the ATi cards are recommended as their encoding capabilities are second to none.

Presler/Cedar Mill pricing is supposed to be comparable to the current 8xx/6xx chips. If you are going single or dual-core it's best to wait for those to drop before making any decisions. They're less than a month away now. I'm not so sure about the Presler's running quite cool because the Cedar Mill's TDP is 85 and that is still warm. Presler has two Cedar Mill's inside it so the TDP should be a few notches more. They'll run alot cooler than what we have now, but quite cool might be a stretch.
