NOTICE: Nintendo of America has received some reports that a very small number of Wii consoles cannot properly read the dual-layered disc for the new Super Smash Bros Brawl game. Upon examination, Nintendo has preliminarily determined that this disc-read error is caused by the soiling of the consoles optical lens by environmental factors such as excessive dust and cigarette smoke. Nintendo is offering to clean these systems free of charge, and recommends that consumers do not attempt to clean the systems on their own. Information regarding the cleaning service can be found at support.nintendo.com or by calling customer service at 1-800-255-3700.

Thats just funny, that was there exact excuse when our Wii couldnt play Metroid (The typical boot up, game loads but does not start-Turn off-backon starts to work) They told us it was from environment, well they said cig smoke but since we dont smoke they changed the verbage.

Anywho, when we got it back from nintendo from the metroid problem, it was a new WII and another "special" copy of metroid. Im wondering what there gonna do this time.

At least they're dong something without first denying it and having a massive uproar (*ahem MicroSoft ahem*) or just flat out denying it and telling the consumers to go take a flying leap (*ahem Sony ahem*)..... damn, must be allergy season ;)

Tell me about it. My nose has been running all day.

One of my buddies bought Brawl at midnight on sunday, and his Wii has this problem. He said Nintendo told him it was a defect with the laser lens not being able to properly focus on both layers of the disc, I think. I'll have to ask him again. Either way they're fixing his Wii free of charge, and I think they're paying shipping costs also. Go Nintendo!

Sounds like it's actually a known technical issue, but they are quietly fixing it while hoping to make people think it's purely by chance or their own fault.

MS execs are probably taking notes.... (RROD is a "smoke alarm" safety feature built into the system to prevent fire hazards....just send it in and we will clean the system and switch it back on for you free of charge....)

I just really like the fact that they are fixing them with virtually no questions asked. TONS of other companies need to be taking notes on this. Service like that is what keeps people happy and makes return customers. Go Nintendo.

Nintendo is fantastic when it comes to console repair. My Wii started to artifact after a few months I emailed them and had a box with prepaid shipping to send back within three days and had a brand new console in my hands within ten days of the original email.
