Flux here:

Just got out of an interview with Jay Wilson, and he surprised us with one thing. Attribute points are not player-assignable in D3. They're not in the blizzcon build, but we thought that was just to simplify things for new players at the show. Jay says no, that's how it is in the game now. His explanation was that it makes items even more important, and that it lets the designers plan a bit better (they can assume players will have at least X in each stat by a given level). You still get attributes, and they will still be required for equipment use, but they are automatically assigned each level up. Thus every Wizard will have the same base str/vit/dex/etc as every other Wizard of the same level. Same for the Barb and WD.

I predicted that this would result in a great outcry, most of it not happy. You guys are free to prove me right or wrong.

We'll have more from the interview shortly, and will post video of it later today.

i wont pass full judgement until the game is out as perhaps they will have other features that make up for this removing of what made diablo diablo!

as one person said over on [H]

Kaldskryke;1033158889 But during my brief time in World Of Warcraft it started to become obvious to me that Blizzard is (collectively) a control freak. They don't encourage emergent gameplay said:
as the player wants[/I], it's about the player enjoying the game as Blizzard wants. Do you want to explore the landmass? Too bad: we've put impassible mountains in your way. Do you want to challenge yourself against high level opponents? Too bad: we'll make them artificially extra-difficult and reduce the rewards so that you'll never 'want' to grind anything but 'Yellows'. Do you want to make items for your friends without fighting? Too bad: grinding mobs is nigh mandatory for materials, and anything you make that's any good will be soul-bound to you anyway. Do you want to put some personality into your character? Too bad: intra-class variety is a joke (read: D3 attributes).

.

This is very interesting because it's like the exact opposite of Fable 2 were clothing does not affect your resistance to damage. Your stats do so this could be an interesting philosophical debate about which method is better. Personally I like attributes and I like armor giving bonuses as well just like in Diablo 2. But if I had to choose between the two I would pick Fable 2's system. I can picture it now. I'll be an even bigger noob in Diablo III because I wont have the uber leet gear; and I thought it was bad in Diablo 2.

Meh, didn't have them in WoW (only via itemization), and I felt that my WoW toon was far more customizable than any Diablo toons I've played.

Man, they are completely killing what was great about D2.... More and more I feel D3 is not going to be what is SHOULD be.... :(

Edit: Its turning into some game you might see in an arcade

Well we have to remember that Blizzard North created the first two Diablos and they no longer exist. So I guess Blizzard was always going to make a game slightly different than the Blizzard North guys, but I never thought they would change the mechanics so radically.

I'm sure they have a good reason for this.

...But I'm just not feeling it.

They seem to be doing their best to alienate long-time fans of their games this week.

Edit:
People seem to be saying, "Attributes hardly allowed for any customization anyways; it was just a waste of time...." I agree, but I don't think that means attributes should be removed from the game altogether. Sure they'd need to fix it, along with a lot of other things, but that was one of the things that made the game seem so large.

Not sure if I enjoy what they will be trying to do but this way gear will mean a lot more than anything. Which can be a positive thing. It makes things a little less complicated for some players.

I'll wait to see, if it doesn't mess anything up im all for it which if its passed onto gear from the sounds of it still keeps things interesting.

They are also saying health and mana leech might not be in the game and of course we've already seen a lot of news on the health orbs. Even if all of these changes make the game funner it changes the base game so much that it makes it very undiablolike.

Coming from a hardcore diablo 2 player, this seems like a good change. Realistically there were very few correct ways to actually spend your attribute points. IE, for a sorc you should spend every point into HP because through items you could get unlimited mana regen (str and dex were obv worthless). They are just taking out the element of being able to mess up your attributes. Many people just do not understand this or refuse to accept it. Then they cry oppression from blizzard stiffling their creativity, rofl @ that.

Talents and gear will make your character your character, pretty much like it always was.

From everything I've read about this, everyone mad sounds like they want diablo 2 again in a new 49.99$ box. Diablo 2 had a ton of changes from diablo 1, for the better.

p.s. Attribute zerg stacking with charms was stupid.

(as a long time D2 player myself) Shiggity, you make some good points. For the most part I trust Blizzard.

Also though part of me wants a percentage of players to fail at attributes and therefore be easy to kill in PvP...

But then theres the chance that someone has a better attribute distribution then you and kill you in pvp (it could happen :) )

I was also a long-time player and hardcore pvp'er/trader in D2. Would prefer it if they let stats be customizable, but don't really care too much if it isn't. On the other hand, I also don't trust Blizzard to make the stats 'properly' assigned because they're quite notorious in often screwing up skills or items to give worthless bonuses that the character has no use for. They likely will screw up the same way with stats.

Only real problem I have with automated stats is that I can't put a ton of vit/dex (depending on my class) to be stronger in pvp, but then again nobody else can either. Not really sure what to think of this yet.

Can I save these threads so I can laff at some of you later when you participate in future post-Diablo 3 and StarCraft 2 threads?

I don't have any problems with Starcraft 2 other than the 3 games thing which is kind of annoying, but I am disappointed with the direction that Diablo III is taking. Why mess up a good formula? Starcraft 2's gameplay seems to be pretty similar to the old game while Diablo III has so many things I never thought I'd see in a Diablo game. Health orbs instead of potions? No life leech or mana leech? The attribute change is nothing to lose sleep over, but I wonder what else they will change or take away.

yes please do,. as i mentioned i will wait until the game is out, but from the "sound" of things, this does not sound like the diablo i spent literally months in total playing, customizing my characters, did i want a dual sword barb, or an axe barb? or a more spell based barb with less power and more shout and other crap.. with this new system, it doesn't look like you can't really choose a "specific" way to go, you just have to go the way blizzard says you do within certain boundaries

So you guys liked having to make multiple barbs to maximize attributes for each for certain roles?

Now you'll have interchangeable gear overlaying over those attributes so you'll be able to play the class however you want...

Do you guys know how gear itemization works?
