I just upgraded to Mandrake 8.2 from 8.1 after losing all the data on my HD (bad habit) and I'm having trouble getting things back to normal.
First, when I try to install Opera 6.01b, it says that it can't find the libpng.so.2 file. I looked in /usr/lib and found libpng.so.3 and another similarly named file, but nothing else relevant.
After a quick look around, I found this page that infromed me that there is an issue (goody). I suppose that I'll just have to wait for Opera to fix it unless someone has a work-around.
The other problem is with xmms. When I try to play an mp3, it registers that I pressed the play button, but it doesn't do anything. If I press the pause button rapidly, in makes a clicking noise while the analyzer bars bounce, but nothing else.

Never used Opera before, but I had similar problems with other programs that required libpng.so.2. It is on the Mandrake 8.1 CD (forget which one), but doesn't solve every problem if you install it on 8.2. Try it, and if it doesn't work I guess you could compile your own from source for Opera to see if it solves the problem.

Since Mandrake 8.2 is so new, it maybe a good idea to lay off for a couple weeks and stick with 8.1. My 8.1 install was far more stable than the new 8.2, but I think it has to do with older programs crashing rather than the OS being unfit.

As for the XMMS thing, I had the exact same problem. I reinstalled XMMS and it seemed to fix the problem, but then it got random crashes playing songs. Again, my 8.1 install was perfect, so I would assume it is just an issue of waiting.

use something like galeon until you can fix opera...galeon is a phat browser that IMO is better than mozilla. i use to swear by mozilla until a couple days ago but now i realize which is better. galeon is mozilla without all the fat.

as for xmms, make sure you have your output plugin configured properly. that could be your problem.

If you are feeling daring, you could symlink the library file. ie ln -s libpng.so.3 libpng.so.2 . Of course this most likely will cause other problems...

Thaks for your suggestions. For some reason, I can't stand Mandrake 8.2 (probably my problems + it's too windowsy), so I'm just going to go back to 8.1 with the hope that xmms 1.2.7 will fix my problems.
Also, Opera is closed-source AFAIK, so recompiling isn't an option.

I might be, but I'm just using Mandrake until I can get a good slackware book (also no extra CDRs). Mandrake's better than Windows, but it's still too windowsy for my tastes.

Mandrake 8.2 is a very unstable OS, that's why i'm back to Windows XP ;)
I also got that error when trying to install Opera, no luck

I'm back to 8.1 now. Looks like I've got some more frisbees to play with (I like the AOL frisbees better though; they're free).

I thought mandrake 8.1 was windowsy/mac-ish especially if you selected the aurora packages (graphical boot loading), depending how you had it setup... i was scared... wasn't sure if i was on a G3/4 when i booted up :D

The only real problem i've had w/ 8.2 is that i can't get the nvidia drivers to work properly... and they do something really nasty.

Nvidia has directions on the download page for Mandrake 8.2 users. Download the source RPMs and "rpm --rebuild xxx.rpm" to make them work. Worked for me.
