Half-Life 2 preview benchmarks
Lol - yep, forgot about that game. I never was much of a fan, but.....

I'm not about to base overall performance on 1 game that's not even out. The same goes for ATI, according to the the inital DOOM3 trials they get "owned" but I for one think things will change before the games hit the shelves (better drivers for both I imagine). For example, that review uses 52.xx series which are outdated & didn't perform well.

(I'm not getting to the whole "cheat" issue & I also believe that ATI will have DOOM3 running just fine on their cards by the time it's released)

I would like to see what the 9600XT would do using the CAT 3.2's against the 5900SE then

The Cat 3.2 doesnt have support for the XT cards...i believe the 3.9's were the first driver for them (either that or the 3.8's...thats as far back as you can go)

I jsut bought a 9600xt[ well parents did, its my X mas present, cant wait] was a great deal, 180 -50 for HL2 so in actuality it only cost me about 130 dollars. While its a great deal for the money, i dont see it really beating a 9700pro anytime soon. can it beat a 9700np thou? anyone know, i havent searched yet.

so happy in a few days gonna be rid of this horrendus Nvidia GF2.....its ATi time!

yeah all this 9600XT beating a 9700 even a nonpro is just silly
and as for the 5900se/XT it looks like 1 hell of an awesome card for $200 and i think it may be the buy of the year cuz the review i saw they OCed it to the same speed of a 5900 ultra
not to bad for a $200 card eh?
way better then $400

The 9600XT will not beat a 9700 in any of its flavor. The only thing the 9600xt will beat is the 9500 pro/np.

The 128bit/256bit difference between the 9600 and 9700 as well as the 4pipes/8 pipe difference is too much.

GPU and Ram speed aside, No matter how fast you go, you can only shove so much through a 4 lane compare to an 8 lane highway.

As for a 9800SE that is just plain a waste of money. The 4 pipes that the card loses will cut its preforance by lat least 35-40% and I am giving the card some rason of doubt. I had a 9500 np, when I softmodded it and enabled 4 more pipes I normally got 40-60% more from my card so yes the SE is !@#!@#!@#@!

and yes the 5900SE is very Impressive but it should be 5900XT, the offical Name ^^

the 9600XT does NOT beat a 9700pro and also the speeds are wrong for the 9700Pro above

Real Speeds for the 9700Pro:

GPU: 325mhz
Ram: 620mhz

actually I consider a 9500 pro a bit faster than a 9600xt. There is absolutely NOOOOOOOO way a 9600xt will ever get anywhere near a 9700 in performance, let alone a pro. the 9600xt is 4 pipes and 128 bit ram vs. 8 pipes and 256 for the 9700 and up

And that's not to disparage the 9600, it's a damn fine 4 pipe card - but it IS a 4 pipe card & there's nothing you're going to do to it that will allow it to keep up with an 8 pipe card ala the 9700/9800/5900's

Pixelshader 2.0 - 5900's are not good at it shall we say.

ROTFLMAO - Very eloquent! Short, subtle & to the point :D

I may be way off here, but when I check on ORB even a "poor" performing NVidia can keep up, IMHO it just illustrates that a 4 pipe card just can't keep up.

I checked the highest 9600 series w/ an AMD CPU, the fps on PS2.0 were 34.7. With a 5900nu O/C'd to 450/950 I get 38.6.

As I stated before, I'm NOT casting aspersions on the 9600 as it's damn fine product but it IS a 4 pipe card & has it's limitations.

the CAT 3.2's are the only drivers you can run w/o having lockups and other unacceptable behavior.

Stating ATI is the best option of cards is false, from my personal experience and from valid facts.

Having a card that is marginally slower than another card that has hardware&software issues makes more sense to me.
