I have a Compaq Presario 4704 that someone replace the hard drive on (Samsung SV2044D). The hard drive was partitioned C: through L: with C: being 503MB. I ran fdisk and deleted everything on the hard drive, formatted and loaded Windows 98. The hard drive is supposed to be 20GB but I could only find the 503MB on C:. I went over to Compaq and did the ole Ask Compaq routine and was advised to clear the CMOS...Upon attemting to reboot I get a "1790-Disk O Error" followed by "163-Time Date not set" Then "press F1 to boot" after hitting F1 it just goes to a blinking cursor at the top left of the screen. Any ideas ???

for one, compaq doesnt know **** about tech-support

just asking, but if you have two computers....one with xp maybe? if you do then good, just put the hard drive in there, start up with your windows 98 disk in the drive, and when it asked to boot from cd, hit a key, then format the drive from there, and install win98, and put it back in your other computer

if you dont have xp on another computer....then get a win98 boot disk, go into bios, and set the first boot device to your floppy drive....then restart and boot form the floppy, when the A:\ comes up, type c:\, and then do whatever the command is to format, someone else prolly knows it...sorry bout that part....but yea

Samsung should have utilities on there site. I know Western digital has plenty of utilities you can download to help you out and other hard drive manufacturers should also have them. It might need to be repartitioned and make sure the bios detects the drive properly. i don't know how helpful the bios is in a compaq. If you keep having problems then just post back with a little more info and we will try to help.

Before you format, make sure you run FDisk. Delete all the existing partitions, then create those that you want. When you reboot, then format whatever partitions you create.

Well guy's when I put a boot disk (I tried 6 different ones) I get the "1790-Disk Error" then 163-Time & Date not set" at the top left part of the monitor .... but the "BOOT F1" box does not appear at the bottom left of the monitor... Without the boot disk the BOOT F1 box appears but does nothing when I press the F1 key Hitting the F10 is supposed to bring you into the BIOS and hitting F10 after you enter the BIOS will save the changes or so sezzz Compaq .... I tried hitting F8, F5, Ctrl>Alt>Enter, F1 trying to enter the BIOS to aleast set the date and time .... Nothing seems to let me into the BIOS ... The box was working just fine except not being able to find the lost 19.5GB of hard drive until I cleared the CMOS

Well all I can think of is the battery is bad or came unseated. Try checking that. It sounds like that might be the problem but I am no compaq expert.

Okay gang here is what I tried...I pulled the CMOS jumper and pulled the hard drive out and put it in a 4840 Compaq, fdisked it formatted it and installed Windows 98 (the 4840 saw 8.2GB) pulled the hard drive and reinstalled it in the 4704 put the CMOS jumper back on Booted and I got the following 32768 KB OK>162-System Options Not Set>163-Time & Date Not Set .......Then "The following configuration options were automatically updated: >Disk 1 Type:65 >If you are running Unix, you need to configure your system using the Compaq User Diagnostics diskette > Total Memory Installed: 32768 Kbytes > CMOS checksum invalid, default values loaded > F1 Save Changes > F2 Ignore Changes.... Hitting F1 just sent me back to where I was with the above formentioned _ flashing cursor....Hitting F2 gave me a "non system disk or disk error replace and strike with any key when ready" this is without anything in the floppy drive....Put in a boot disk hit enter and got the A: prompt typed in fdisk and got "No fixed disk present" ... Funny thing though when I hooked the hard drive back up on the 4840 and booted it detected changes but gave me the same F1, F2, and a F10 option to enter the bios ... no such animal on the 4704 .... now what ??? LOL this is begining to not be fun .... Thanks for the help !!!!
