I just formated a 10gig partition (in win2000). Can anyone explain why immediatly after formatting it shows around 60MB used space? thanks

Hmmm . . . that's strange.

Well, you could try formatting it again using your Win2k/XP boot disks and see if that'll fix it.

While it's true that Win2k does set aside a partition that contains info about the NTFS partition(s), it's not 60MB large. More around 8-11MB.

I'm not sure this applies to your case, but it is worth a look.

yes i was already aware of that. my 13.5 gig (i know its small compared to todays standards) shows up as a 12.9 gig

i tried reformating with the install disk but encountered the same thing. i formated it as fat32 and i dont see this. but this is what i get immediatly after formating in ntfs:

Try this, get a utility disk from the drive maker and do a low level format on the drive.

This will ensure a clean data wipe and leave the drive empty.

Then format it...................................NTFS

It looks like the drive you are trying to format is a 2nd hard drive. Is that correct? If so, then how is the drive partitioned?

I have a 2nd hard drive in my system that only has 1 extended partition. For some reason that I can't explain, Partition Magic indicates that the extended partition does not start at the beginning of the drive (ie. there is some wasted space at the beginning of the drive that I'm guessing is reserved for a primary partition that doesn't exist).

I don't know if this helps any, but try running FDISK, Partition Magic, or some other partitioning program. Delete all the existing partitions & then re-create 1 primary partition. Then reformat.

this is the only hard drive i have on my system. i have it partitioned into 3 primary partitions. the space taken after i format seem to be about .6%. if i make a 1 gig partition about 6mb is taked. on a 10gig about 60mb is taken. i will try fdisk and completely wipe the drive and if that doesnt work ill try the low level format.

is there a free progam that can partition and format in ntfs?
