I guess no one will ever forgive ATI for Quack but it sped up a GAME ! When shown it was quickly fixed at no performance loss in less than a week . All the while [H] and Nvidia were prancing all over the place and never spoke to ATI before blabbing the story ( scoop )
What is different this time :
1/ This is a definite cheat not an optimisation ( quack was a cheat too but could be bent as an optimisation depending on the viewpoint )
2/ The all holy Nvidia , whistle blowers on the quack issue are involved .
3/ The assistant whistle blower over at [H] is now telling us to give Nvidia a chance , it may be a bug
and that we are all just jumping to conclusions ............... right .
4/ Besides Quack , you'd be very hard pressed to find another confirmed ATI 'cheat' . Trident was caught once , SiS twice or so regarding the Xabre and S3 with the Savage 2000 I think . But I am having great difficulty keeping track with the number of lies , deceptive PR , IQ hacks and cheats emanating from Nvidia over the past year .
5/ ATI got caught , admitted it and fixed the issue with a driver which lost no performance ! Nvidia gets caught and instead lies about it !
6/ This driver cheat was implemented in a benchmark , purposely to fool the consumer . And being a synthetic bench the consumer/reviewr gets nothing but erroneus bragging rights as opposed to a cheat which speeds up a game or an application .
