Situation: Replaced crippled 580GTX's that were overheating and causing the computer to blackscreen with 760GTX's. SLI in both configurations. Noticed the problem in newer games after upgrading to latest drivers. I did a clean reinstall of the drivers and the problem only got worse; the screen would go black and lose input and for about 3 seconds, sound would play that is very similar to the sound heard in Fallout NV's Sierra Madre expansion when you get close to a radio while the scarred girl is your follower.

The problem nearly went away altogether by adding the 760GTX's. Not only did I get a nice performance bump, but many of my games had a superior 3D experience and success loading larger textures because the vRAM more than doubled in capacity. It's very nice when your bottleneck is coming from the access times on a HDD.

Then it happened again on Dead Island Riptide. This time, I CTD'd instead of losing control altogether. BZZZZZZZZT-CTD. Once, this produced an error saying that the video driver had waited too long to sync (or something along those lines) and to ensure I was using the newest driver. To be sure, I did a clean install of my drivers.

Then I played Overlord in 3D and had to alt-tab. When I alt-tabbed back, the game started "freezing" every few seconds. The frequency increased until I got that telltale BZZZZZZT again and my screen filled with the squiggles of an old NES cartridge that needs to be blown out. I had to reboot to clear it.

Finally, I tried using 3D on STO in a window. This worked fine. I did it in fullscreen on a fresh login. That was great too. I tried to swap from Windowed Maximized to Full Screen in one go, though, and BZZZZZZT-CTD. Again, it was telling me that the video driver had waited too long to sync.

The cards play things that tax them far, far more than these games did, and perform flawlessly. I get no SLI stutter, no artifacts, etc. Temps are good and I stress-tested both cards just to make sure one of them wasn't individually problematic. The PSU is a 1200w PSU so I know I've got the juice coming down the rails. I see a lot of posts on the net lately about driver issues; are nVidia drivers starting to drop the ball?

I would suggest trying some different drivers. The one driver fits all approach has it's draw backs in my opinion. They release new versions to fix issues with older ones. Add SLI profiles etc. Sometimes they make things beautiful for one card/game and totally mess another one up.
So you may need to try a few of their latest and greatest to see which one works for your card.
You also mention that you've had this problem since the 580's.

Have you tried the good old driver sweeper and safe mode?
