New York Attorney General files antitrust charges against Intel; alleges bribery, coercion

:clap::clap::clap: :):thup: :beer:

A few examples mentioned:

Internal e-mail from IBM executive in January 2005: “I understand the point about the accounts wanting a full AMD portfolio. The question is, can we afford to accept the wrath of Intel…?”

Internal e-mail from HP executive in June 2004 after HP defied Intel and launched an AMD product: “Intel has told us that HP’s announcement on Opteron [AMD’s server chip] has cost them several $B [Billions] and they plan to ‘punish’ HP for doing this.”

Internal Dell e-mail in February 2004 regarding the possibility of Dell ending its exclusive relationship with Intel: “PSO/CRB [Intel CEO Paul Ottelini and Intel Chairman Craig Barrett] are prepared for jihad if Dell joins the AMD exodus.

Internal e-mail from Intel executive in April 2006: “Let’s talk more on the phone as it’s so difficult for me to write or explain without considering anti-trust issue.”

wow seriously?

"punish" a company for having the mind to use some one elses chip, i take it no other agreements were made to use only intel...very strange

The only strange thing I found was the lack of action when all this was going on.

People today were carrying on about Ruiz and the insider trading thing, but those same people will just shrug off this type of behavior ... :-/

On November 4, 2005 Otellini reported internally in a “Confidential — DO NOT FORWARD” email about “one of the most emotional calls I have ever, ever had with [Michael Dell].” In this email, Otellini wrote:

- [Michael Dell] opened by saying “I am tired of losing business” … he repeated it 3-4 times. I said nothing and waited.
- He has been traveling around the USA. He feels they are losing all the high margin business to AMD-based sku’s …
- He is ‘tired of being behind for 4 years (when I protested that it was 2, he said, no the last 2 years, this year, and next year).
- As a result, “Dell is no longer seen as a thought leader”

136. On Nov. 10, 2005, Michael Dell followed up with an email to Otellini: “We have lost the performance leadership and it’s seriously impacting our business in several areas.” Otellini’s reply: “There is nothing new here. Our product roadmap is what it is. It is improving rapidly daily. It will deliver increasingly leadership products … Additionally, we are transferring over $1B per year to Dell for meet comp efforts. This was judged by your team to be more than sufficient to compensate for the competitive issues.”

137. Michael Dell, however, continued to press home to Intel its performance deficit and its effects on Dell. On November 24, 2005 he capped an email exchange with Otellini by writing: “None of the current benchmarks and reviews say that Intel based systems are better than AMD. We are losing the hearts, minds and wallets of our best customers.”

139. On February 16, 2006, Intel took note of a service report in which Dell’s CEO Kevin Rollins had said that Dell had “made no plans to begin using” AMD chips. “Finally something positive” commented one Intel executive. Otellini commented: “The best friend money can buy.”

Here is some more stuff .Promising jhad , thats just crazy . Am glad NY state will be helping AMD , more institutions against intel means they will have hard time bribing people, there bound to be someone who wont take the money .Although they might be motivated due to new plant being built here :).Now we just wait for the judgment .

Don't you guys love our legal system?

By the time Intel actually gets punished for this (if found guilty), AMD could be out of business.

Weeeee

Yah read another article billions of dollars to Dell to run only Intel. (up to 16% kickbacks)

Was not just a bribe though, when Dell tried to back out Intel threatened to go to competition.

Still, Dell should have reported it immediately and now suffers criminal charges as well.

It is just kind of strange that the internal emails are even considered. I think the only only credence is Intel internal and external communications.

"JUMPS FROM THE BALCONY"---"Down with the tyrants"

It took long enough!

I was a hardcore AMD guy when all of this was going down..

I wanted to see intel burn!

Now all this time has gone by, and I dont care anymore..

Hopefully they can get this settled.. Money talks!

At this very moment, I'm still surprised to see so many Intel OEMs out there. AMD cheaper for the same performance 3/4 cases.

It never made much sense to me why, for what 3+ years, AMD had hands down faster AND cheaper consumer and more notably server CPU's, yet their market share barely grew. Every store I went to had its shelves filled with boxes powered by intel chips, when AMD had chips that were faster and cheaper available. I would always walk around laughing saying AMD A64 and then A64 X2's boxes are faster and cheaper than all these boxes. The only AMD boxes I ever saw were from total garbage brands or bottom barrel cheap PCs with AMDs "celeron" chips, I forget the name. None of the performance PCs ever had A64's or A64 X2's when they were the fastest thing available. Of course for that 3-4 year period every single pc I built for friends and customers used A64's, and my custies were always very pleased at the speed and even moreso price of these PCs.

Its even better now, as middle to top of the line Phenom II X2-X4 boxes can be built for what just CPUs used to cost a few years ago. A full Phenom II builds price tag is absolutely insanely low. Yet, the store shelves are still filled with Intel boxes, cheaper ones all still have core2duo's and quads, and the priciest boxes all have i7's. Still the only things using AMD are the absolute cheapest crappiest boxes, and they are still using the old A64 X2's or Phenom 1's. I feel so bad for AMD, they got totally shafted by the OEM pc makers and server builders, for both the few years prior to 09 when their chips were the fastest thing around, and now when Phenom II's offer very competitive performance for significantly less than intel systems.

Now I know why. Of course I read about this stuff here and there years ago, but nothing as concrete, reputable, of visible as whats going on now at the end of 09.

At least till now I would suggest an intel build to people who wanted the absolute fastest system when money isn't an issue. Even then that has been what, 2 boxes in the last 6+ years vs dozens of amd boxes Ive built. But now I will not be recommending Intel at all, and if a customer asks for it, Ill be sure to both explain the similar performance for much less money AND the fact that intel is using ****zy business practices to keep AMD down. If they still want intel, well Im getting paid to do what the customer wants, but Ill be sure to do my absolute best to convince them to go AMD before finally caving.
