Why are macs more powerful than pc's?

Would an oc'd pc compete?

The G5 only runs at 2ghz but is touted as the worlds most powerful computer.

Is it the processor? The OS?Does it use special machine code?

Can anyone explain?

They are not, most high end PC's beat the G5.

Marketing....If you made a new computer would you not boast it as the best?

an OC'd G5 would have a hard time keeping up with a non OC'd PC, apple is full of crap with their marketing, about the only thing they beat PC's in is software specificaly writen and optimized for them, they are nothing better than a $2000 paper weight or door stop IMO.

also worth noting but I belive the G5's are also dual CPU, you take a dual CPU PC and put it against a G5 and it will smoke the G5.

do I need a special mobo to create a dual cpu pc?

OR more to the point, who makes dual cpu mobo's?

I think I read somewhere that Apple's ad saying the G5 was the worlds most powerful computer was banned in the uk because it wasn't true.

My friend has one of those Dual G5s - I think its hilarious, so expensive, yet so under powered, I really was expecting it to smoke my rig by a fair margin, yet, it falls to its knees, I was not impressed.

If you do a little dually comparison, the dual 248 opteron or even dual 244 opteron blows the G5 out of the water.

And I'm quite glad that the adverts were banned here :)

For info about dual processing checkout the SMP (something multi processing...maybe synthetic?) forum. Lots of good stickies to read and tons of great posts as well.

From what I remember about macs they were good with photshop and that was all. They also have a different processor architecture...

symmetric multi processing.

The PPC970 (G5) is a worty processor, but it is not a PC killer yet, PCs still hold the performance crown in both single and multi processor desktop environments. IMO, the PPC970 is bashed a little more than it deserves around here, but it is hyped way, way more than it deserves by apple.

Here's some PPC 970 links you may find interesting:

Here's a tip, never take anyone's benchmakrs or claims at face value, especially Apple's.
