OK. I have no more idea of what shuld I try in order to rise the FSB at 400MHz. :bang head . But, before continue, I will list my current PC configuration:
  • CPU: AMD Sempron 2600+ @ 1833 Mhz
  • Motherboard: EPoX 8RDA3I PRO
  • DDR: 512 MB Kingmax [single board]
  • HDD: Maxtor 120MB w/ 2 MB of cache
  • Video card: Gigabyte ATI Radeon 9000 PRO [64MB/128 bytes]
My target is to overclock the CPU to run at 2200Mhz. We all know that AMD Sempron processors have the multiplier top locked [or just plain locked?]. So, in order to get there, I have to set into BIOS like this:
  • CPU Clock Ratio: 11
  • FSB: 200
  • Memory: By SPD [CL 8 4 4 2.5]
I got 11x200=2200, the new processor frequency.

Using the default VCore [1.65V] the system will not boot at all. So, I have to rise the VCore a little... lets say to 1.75V. The system boots! Great! But I get no stability in 3D applications [read _games_]. The system crashes if I play NFSU2 after a few ten seconds and I have NO idea of why this occurs...

Does any of you succeeded to overclock an AMD Sempron 2600+ on a configuration like mine? Any advice is appreciated as I'm out of hope :bang head

Thank you!

PS. Please be gentle with my English :D

Welcome to the forums

First is what are you using to cool this cpu? your temps should be at or below 55c when on full load, so the stock heatsink won't work. And Your probably going to have to pump more voltage through that chip but don't do if your temp is already too high.

edit: what speed is your ram rated at?

cooling

To cool the microprocessor I'm using the cooler that is bundled with processor. My Sempron is BOX [this is, it comes packed with an AMD approved cooler].

Thank you!

Ram

Oh... sorry I forgot such an important detail! My RAM is PC3200 @ 400MHz.

the stock cooler is not good enough to cool an overclocked CPU.

what temperature is the CPU at at full load?

you can also try to overclock it step by step, and check for stability with Prime95 after each *step*

When running @ 2200MHz the temperature is not bigger than 55C at full load! When running at its default speed, the temperature in full load is 45C.

EDIT: I have to check again the temperatures written above [I'm not sure that these temperatures are very accurate].

Getting a new cooler should help get your system stable. If not then you'll need a little more VCore. I wouldn't use any more VCore than you have with the stock cooler. A good cooler if you don't mind spending some money is the SI-97 along with one of those 92mm Enermax Adjustable fans. A cheap option is this PC Cooler Heatsink. I have the all copper version (which is out of stock at SVC currently) & it keeps my ThoroughBred nice & cool. The temp difference between the two coolers should be about 3° at most.

British users can still get it here for cheap.

If I would be 100% sure that my system crashes because of the poor performance of my cooler, I would buy a better cooler at once! But first, just to be sure, I will ask one of my friends to give me his cooler just for testing...

I'll keep you updated! Thank you a lot!

I can hit 2.2GHz myself with about 1.9v but thats mostly because I have a lousy CPU for overclocking. I bring this up because your CPU may not be a good overclocker even with a good heatsink. You may have to put more VCore through it. Just something to keep in mind. You may end up needing a 1.8v VCore to be stable. Also make sure you've disabled Spread Spectrum & you're running your memory within spec while you're pushing for a high FSB.

bigger cooler

Thank you guys! I will try to use a better cooling system and I'll keep you updated.

I have a Sempron 2400+ running @ 2.2Ghz (specs in my sig). For a cooler I'm using a Thermaltake TR2-M2, got it for $14 shipped from some vendor I found through pricewatch. It's not all copper, but it has a generous slug of it in the base, a 5400rpm fan, and a nice smooth contact area.

You motherboard and RAM are both 200Mhz FSB capable so the stability problems are almost surely being caused by your CPU. Assuming this assertion to be true the only ways to increase stability are better cooling and/or more vcore. Either way you will very likely see an improvement with a better heatsink & fan combo. But it is possible that you Sempron just isn't capable of 2.2Ghz without a radical cooling setup, some chips unfortunately just don't overclock well.

Another thing you might want to do is run CPU-Burn in for about 8 hours, that REALLY helped my systems stability.

it does

The truth is that my AMD Sempron 2600+ IS overclockable because I have set it to run at 2200MHz [11x200] but it doesn't run for a long time. When running 3D games the system become unstable [crashes].

I'm looking to buy a better cooling system. I'll let you know.
