I've gotta buy a damn vid card for someone.......and I can't find a VooDoo locally. I know the G3 is best....but price is out of the question.

Approx prices and best to worst would be greatly appreciated. As I don't know NVidia, I have no advice to offer.

Obviously prices arent' necessary (I can compare to pricewatch prices).......but best to worst would be a big help.

GeForce 2 MX (uses sdr sdram)
GeForce 2 GTS (comes in 32mb or 64 mb ddr flavors, same gpu as pro but with slower memory timmings)
GeForce 2 Pro (64mb ddr)
GeForce 2 Ultra (64mb ddr, fasterest gpu and ram)

An nvidia card shadow?

I assume the 2 MX is the top of the line?

whell.....no VooDoo to be had and I need to buy one t'mor.

Wanna hear the sad part? A friend is willing to buy mine for the cost of a GForce 2. Guess he's a bigger VooDoo fan than I am, and wants to upgrade his 3000 to a 5500. The first card I mentioned is not for me.....however I MAY take him up on his offer.

Don't get me wrong.....I'll still be a VooDoo fan.......but I may give NVidia a test drive. =)

(and I can't beat the offer!)

And if your good with a soldering iron and dont mind screwing your warrenty you can modify the Gforce cards to display as a professional Quadro card which gets you improvements in game frame rates and image apps get a Gforce you wont regret it :).. Elsa is my favorite flavor of Gforce

Hmm...this is something I may check out.......already modded my promise card to give me RAID........may try that as well! Thanks for the info!

Sorry shadow. I listed them from worse to best MX=worst. Ultra=Best. Also modding the geforce for quadro wont make a difference in games unless it is the MX.

NVIDIA....what next a TBird?

Id like to make on addition to the list. In allot of tests a GeForce 1 256 ddr is better than a GeForce 2 mx because of the differences in ram. There are quite a few out there. I would look for a Winfast 256 rev.

Yeah, I left that off the list because I wasn't sure whether or not they were still around. Probably not a bad bet either, only thing is they run real hot.

Didn't get it, but considering the ASUS GForce 2 V7700 (64 meg DDR mem) GTS?

by looking at the list it's the low end GForce?

Thats actually a really good choice in mho. The gts can overclock really well. They are cheap (fairly) and the ddr memory makes a world of difference over the sdr sdram of the MX. While the 64mb does not really make a big improvement over the 32mb versions now, chances are, a year down the road when programs are designing games to take advantage of the extra memory, it will make a difference.

I really wouldn't consider a gts card low end, same gpu as the pro and while it's ram isn't quiet as fast it overclocks a lot better.

i work at the computershop and made lots of computer with different vid cards and after looking at this forum i start testing few vid cards.
i have celeron 566@850 with geforce 256 32sdr
and tnt2mx64,tnt2(32mb),tntultra(32mb),geforce2mx,geforce2(32mb ddr)
savage 4 pro 16 and 32mb, voodoo5500 64mb,voodoo4500(32mb) Ati rage pro 32mb
i have found out that geforce is fastest but not stable for overclocked system.
geforce cards gets way way too hot! (almost got burnt when i tried to pull out the card from agp.
and MAKE SURE U BUY BRAND NAME CARDS!!!!
like creative,elsa,herculies.
some brands like INNO3d,starforcevideoexel they are cheap but slower than other cards

OUCH!........then I guess the $185 sticker is WAY off.......guess I'll shop online.

Thanks tons for the input folks!

Hey shadow. I found a Pro (next step up) for cheaper than the gts that you were looking at. It is under leadtek (which is my personal favorite for nvidia cards). Here is the link if your interested.

http://www.atacom.com/program/atacom_www.cgi?Pagecode=VIDEO_CARD&USER_ID=www

My friend ordered a leadtek ultra from this site and delevery was prompt.

For those of you interested, I found the 32MB GTS Pro for $135 and the shipping is about $4.00 less, so about $7.00 savings (if you care)... which i do. Anyway, thanks for pushing me in the right direction as to which card to get. As you can see, I'm going for the GTS Pro so I'll have about another 6 months until that sh*t is obsolete! hehehehehe...

Hey if you do happen to get a leadtek winfast geforce 256 (DDR) make sure its a Rev B. I doubt there are any A's left but make sure. I bought mine about a year ago and at that time there were more A's than B's.

A different perspective

I know this is all about Nvidia Geforce cards, but you honestly might want to consider the 3D Prophet 4500 from Hercules. It's based on the Kyro II chipset and it looks like it's performing pretty well. That and the Radeon LE is a good buy since it can be flashed with the standard Radeon BIOS and run just as if it were a retail card.

If you're seriously considering either the Geforce SDR, Geforce DDR or Geforce MX, I'd strongly encourage you to buy the Radeon LE instead because you'll get a MUCH more powerful card for your money. Even the most staunch Nvidia supporter has to admit that the Radeon is much more powerful than the Geforce MX (at least I hope they would ;-) ). If you're interested in the Geforce2 GTS/Pro/Ultra that's fine, but I think you should go read some reviews and decide exactly what you are looking for before buying (ex: max fps, high res gaming, all-around card, image quality, etc). I won't mention the GF3 because if you are considering that you should be lynched ;-).

I'm not going to waste time trying to win anyone over or argue whether the Geforce2/Radeon/Kyro is the best, other than to say this: Don't just go with what is popular or hyped, explore ALL of your options before buying!
