I'm upgrading an AMD K6 233 with an AMD K6-3 400. I got the CPU in (all the pinds are good at it fits smooth) and the computer won't boot up. It goes to the IBM screen (where it says it's still a 233) and then a black screen with a cursor in the top left. Anyone got any specific ideas on what it could be? The BIOS is updated to the latest is there anything else I should know?

Thanks in advance

More than likely if your computer started with a 233 K6 it probably wont take a 400, the board is probably a standard 66 mhz FSB set up for a max of 233 mhz, check around on the board for a jumper to set 100 mhz FSB, otherwise you need a new mobo to run that chip.

hmm all my old k6 motherboards had jumpers for the multiplier and FSB and wouldnt show a faster chip unless you set the jumpers accordingly.

What motherboard do you have? Some older motherboards can't recognize the K6-3 properly, and you have to disable the onboard level 2 cache. Not ideal, but since the K6-3 has on die L-2, it isn't that serious of a performance hit.
