I've decided that i'm sick of screwing with getting windows to work (when it's not supose to...)

I'm going to just shell out the cash and buy a legit version of windows.

A few questions.

windows XP:

I currently "have" pro, i've fallen in love with IIS, it's great for forums and such as well as trading files with schoolmates and such.

If i buy home can i use the Pro disk to install IIS, or is Pro differnt then Home, i was kind of under the impression that Pro just comes with IIS, but i wouldnt be suprised if i was wrong.

Win 2k:

People love it, but it seems yester year, again anything like IIS, is it worth buying?

I know this thread may be close to breaking the rules, perhaps it already is, but i feel like i'm running from the law, i just want to buy a legit copy of windows for my new legit computer.

Not sure about installing IIS from the pro disk to the Home edition, but I would recommend XP over win2k if you are aplnning to purchase.

I only recommend XP due to the fact it is bound to be supported by MS a little longer then win2k.

Now, since no decision is ever black and white, it is worth noting the win2k can survive on fewer resources and also accomplish the goals you listed. Win2k Pro may be cheaper then XP and can also run IIS. So, if support is not an issue, then Win2k is as good as WinXP for the scenario you listed.

Id go for XP Pro.

Ive got XP Pro, and I havent looked back.

You can keep your win2000, im happy with this thanks :D

Get XP Pro over win2k. Do you have an older version of windows? Any version on cd would work I think. Just get the XP Upgrade and then when it prompts for previous installation direct it to the cd-rom drive where you put the old windows cd in. Perfectley legal and saves you a bit of money.

You will not be able to install IIS (whatever that stands for) onto ME from XP Pro. ME is a DOS based OS, and XP is NT based which are two programs that are not very compatable with each other. I have XP home and it seems to have pretty much everything that PRO has, and it is even a bit easier to work with than PRO seems to be. (I have the same version of pro as you and it is a buggy pile IMHO). So if I was you I would just spring for HOME ed. or if you cant live without the features of the PRO ed. then spend the 200 ponies and be legit. The SP1 and SP2 updates are the reason that the legit versions run so much better. Now I know why MS releases a buggy program at the start date. Its obviously working as an anti piracy scheme.

not true, search for slipstreamiing sp1 on google, super easy to do.

I do have a legal version of 98 (infact my version of XP is legal too, just not on this PC...it came with my moms dell)

So if i buy the windows xp pro upgrade and use my 98cd that'll work?

Yeah what is this IIS stuff?

Hmm I haven't used it for a bit, but I'm pretty sure it stands for "Internet Information Services" or something liek that, anyway it's a http/ftp server and more.

IIS is Internet Information Services and covers HTTP, FTP, SMTP and i believe NNTP.

It is really easy to use, which is also a drawback to some in the security area. If you are going to use IIS, be sure to use the IISLockDown tool provided at http://microsoft.com/security
