older catalyst drivers and newer radeon cards

Do older versions of catalyst drivers (3.2 etc.) work with newer radeon series cards (9600/ 9800/ etc.) If they don't, is there a way to modify the drivers/ vid card bios to be correctly recognized.

I'm pretty sure you can go back a ways with the drivers. I don't know what's the limit as to how far you can go back though.
