moving to ohio once 2012 gets closer
i have some old school games from like 2002 and some from 2001 around that time and i noticed that NONE of them support 1280x1024 res.

hell most of them dont even support 1024x800........

Its really annoying playing them in 800x600 mode....

I dont get why i cant force my monitor to play in that res. why does the game have to support it?

But my main question is.

My normal settings are 1280x1024. Will playing the game at 800x600 or 1024x800 hurt the monitor at all since it doesn't use that res on a daily basis?

Nah of course not. A CRT will be fine, mine used to switch resolutions all the time and never had a problem. For an LCD you might be able to set up 1:1 pixel mapping to keep the orginial screen size, or just let the image stretch if the aspect ratio is the same and it looks ok to you. If you can't do that on your monitor itself look in your video card control panel.

Remember that in 2002, 800x600 was pretty much the "standard" screensize with 1024x768 being huge. Few, if any, games were made to operate in higher resolutions. The biggest issue was speed, but also the amount of memory required would increase. Not a problem now, but when your computer was maxed out at 128 MB and Windows took up at least half that, memory was at a premium. The games changed the resolution so the player wouldn't have to.

My, how time change!

I'm arguing that statement...
Back in 2000 I already played all of my 2-D games at 1280x1024 and 3D games at 1024x768, 6 years later and I'm playing at 1792x1344.
If the game does not support a higher resolution, blame the developer about not thinking about the future.

And it does not hurt the CRT or LCD in any way, they just have larger pixels to cause burn in. :p

The issue I find is a lack of widescreen res support. eg 1440x900 ...
