Whats your guys' opinion on a thermaltake subzero4g. I hear it can hold room temperature pretty close, with a few degrees aobve/below. I also hear its quiet. Theres a thread maybe some of you already saw. I can't think of it off the top of my head, but it was pretty extensive.

I don't like it, I think it's a waste.

Anyway so what's the current pc looking like?

This is all concepetional talk, howver I'm thinking we are looking at something like:

Pentium 4
30GB Hard Drive (most likely laptop based)
256MB Memory
128MB Video Card for quality visualizations & movies
Extigy2 Sound card
Slot feed DVD drive

Still under discussion (emphasis should be put on these things now) :

Motherboard (Micro-ATX preferrably)
Power Supply (12v perhaps?)
Cooling (maybe a heat tube?)

Yeah, sounds good, going with a Pentium 4, since it will be better suited to the heat problem (it can shut down if it overheats)

If you want, cut back a bit as far as the Graphics card is concerned - a pentium 2 can play DVDs smoothly with razor quality on a 2meg PCI card, and the visualisations are mostly CPU power: consider a Geforce 4 MX, since the spare money will allow you to improve other things, but if you are planning on gaming a LOT, then go for the faster video card...

Bear in mind that you'll be at a lower resolution here, so a Geforce MX will offer good looking performance, on the later games.

That is understandable, and I think that would suit me better anyways. I dont plan on playing any games inside my car . . . or at least not at the moment i don't plan to.

Rather than the P4, I would seriously look into getting a Duron. They don't put out much more than about 30-35 watts of heat. Far easier to keep one cool and plenty of power for what you'll be doing. I wouldn't go for a GF4 MX, though. I'd go for something like a Radon 8500. I picked one up on ebay last week for a friend for something like $47+ shipping.

id go for a celeron tulutin rather than a duron - duron's have exposed cores that could easily be crushed by its heatsink due to g-shock, while celly-t's have a heat spreader like the p4's do. They also run quite a bit cooler than its duron counterpart, and out-performs it aswell.

James seems to have come up with a good idea. All P4 Celerons come with an IHS, so it could be the way to go (if you are going for air).

I think, considering the power of a car, you should do some serious power cooling ......

either the p3 based tully or the p4 based tully would work. For in car use id choose the p3-based tully, though. a 1.2ghz p3-based tully would be plenty powerful for in car use.

Yeah, good ideas about the IHS...

I suppose it's all down to personal preference, depending on what you plan to do with the computer...

You MAY be able to save a bit by using even a cheapo PCI graphics card, since as I said, most DVD and video decoding is done on the CPU, and visualisations are also mostly the CPU, so if you have a PCI card lying about, see how it performs before you spend money on a nicer video card.

Yea I will have to agree with you . . . when running winamp visuals it puts load on the processor, and graphics dont lag so I'll most likely do that. I have a tult core 1.1a chillin here not even in a rig, so I think that is my score.

Sorted then.

If you have a cheapo video card, see how that one goes with the visuals and movies, cos if you have a meaty Radeon 9700 in there, it will probably suffer from the heat much much more than the CPU, due to the tiny heatsinks on most graphics cards.

Use the money you save to invest in a bigger hard drive - you will probably want the storage later.

Here is what my brother and i did:

i had an old dell inspiron that had a bad lcd on it, so we got the idea of taking the lcd off and bolting the laptop under the driver seat and hook it up to the lcd in his dash. Next we added a wireless card to it so we could transfer mp3's to it while it sat in the drive. the best thing about it is that sometimes if you are sitting in a parking lot you can sometimes find an open network and check your email.

so as you can see, really simple and useful

well, people keep thinking about heat, right? ok, most of the time, the extremes of heat for your car, are when you're car is sitting there doing nothing and has been and the windows are rolled up and the doors are locked. Chances are, if your car is that hot, it's because you're not in there. right? and if you're not in there you're Probably not using it. I say probably, because I know myself and other people around here.

So it's Fairly safe to say that if you're just running it while you're IN the car, you should be good. because a processor can RUN well into the 70's celcius, if it's a recent pentium it'll just start underclocking itself and slowing down. besides, if you're sitting there and the ambient is 70, you're probably well on your way to dying and you're probably allreayd passed out.

Undervolt and underclock your processor. keep it cooler. and for when you're not in your car, don't run it. if it's the dead of winter, heck you've got an extra space heater for your car if you don't allready have heating.
if you want to do watercooling, add another raidiator to you car. Our van has a small rad for the transmission. bolted onto the front.

yes, IHS, good idea.

integrated sound will probably be plenty good enough especially on an nforce2 board

go for it. and if you can find good prices on those LCD's let me know, I want one for my suitcase

thats really cool

i cant offer much advice, but i would make sure that it is more or less hidden from view

try to get it so that the monitor can flip down so it cant be seen or what not

because for someeone to break into your car and steal that that would suck

Plans still in the air? What the latest news?
This wont be happening until I get a car to put it in, and a job to fund it. I've got 2 years about, since I am only 14.

I was thinking about just that, there is a Sony model; I think its about 7.5 inches or so. Also I might ghost the whole unit with an old face, so people think I have a crappy stereo system in there. My brother has an old 68' Mustang, and he got a Sony MEX-5DI, which is a Memory Stick deck, and its upwards oif about $650!! So he took his stock faceplate (which if anyone has seen are rather ugly), and hes gonna hinge it to the dash, so it looks like he's still using it, then when u want to pop in a cd, flip er' down.

I was looking into doing this sort of thing awhile back and wanted to use MCE too, but i couldnt find it for resale except with premade computers. Where did you find it for sale and for how much?
Best buy and circuit city. Its not actually a standalone operating system, but rather a add-on for XP, kinda like Plus! for XP. I think it was around 60-80? But I dont recall off the top of my head. Thats why they have BestBuy.com! :D
