I cant seem to view the other thread that I posted  - my browser windows just crashes. I would be very grateful if people could post again here what their comments were, or if someone could cut 'n' paste them here. Thanks :D

I hope this is the one you were talking about

Update on Folding Linux - testers required soon!
Site for folding linux - 'overfoldix' is:

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/nelson27

Currently just a quick Q&A

I have emailed the creator of the base system and have permission. I should have something usable by mid march. I will need volunteers to test it - it is unlikely that it will work first time, but will probably be usable within a few weeks.
The system requirements:

A PC (duh! ):
Any CPU that will finish a WU in 9 days
About 16MB RAM minimum - 32MB strongly recomended.
CDROM drive - capable of booting off a CD
One of the following network cards (or compatible):

SMC ultra, 3Com 3c509 and 3c590, VIA-Rhine, Intel EtherExpress pro 100,
AMD PCnet32, RealTek 8139 (not all revisions), DEC Tulip and NE2000.

You will also need a connection to a network or direct net connection. Support for dial up internet will follow later. F@H should take care of the proxy business.

Sounds interesting. But I would need to install Linux on a machine. Maybe I'll make that a weekend project. I've always wanted to delve deeper into Linux.

the whole point of this is that you don't need linux installed...penguin is building a stand alone distrobution whose only duty will be to fold 24/7 with as little hardware as possible (running off of ram rather than hard disk). so if you have an old box that you wouldn't mind wiping out to try out "overfoldix" on, it'd be a great help to him!

I am in I just have one question. will you be able to boot any windows computer off of the disk? Ex. My brothers p4 1.4 I change bios to boot cd first and boot the Folding linux CD. It folds using linux. Then I turn it off and boot from the hardrive. Will it be back to normal windows? Or will there be any problems? Thanks.

Thanks :D
Could you perhaps post in it and direct people here? Thanks.

OK:

1) Booting off a CD will not touch the hard disk. It will not even look at it. Windows will boot fine afterwards.

2) You do not need linux installed on the PC

3) The list of supported network cards is cut 'n' paste from an email  I dont know specifically which cards are and aren't supported. Trying will do no harm.

4) Onboard LAN - depends (fav answer to any question :)). If it uses one of the mentioned chips, then yes. There's no harm in trying tho.

TT120: Any questions, my PM box is always open (and empty :( :D).

Thanks for the support guys :) I'll let you know when the test copies are available.

PS updating site today - adding just a little bit. Once I have something usable I will post it at freshmeat.net and/or sourceforge.net.

OK, I linked old thread to this thread now lets see how many people read my post. darkartic post this in old thread:
I may be able to supply a Pentium 233@266. What kind of net connections does it support? I use PPPoE (DSL, Sympatico, whatever you want to call it). Maybe I could do my computer to see if it's only temporary (TCP/IP network).

-DarkArctic

I reposted link of there. that sucks when you go through the effort of posting and nobody reads it.

PPoE, I think I know what that is...
The distro will assume that through the network it can access the net. I'm not sure how PPP over Ethernet works.

This will be added to v2, but v1 is just concerned with getting something working.

David, what is the status of OverFoldiX 1.0? You know we're all anxious to test it out.:)

Currently at alpha version - robertm has done some testing (thanks robert! :D) and suggested a few changes. I just need to update a few scripts and then it *should* work. If that fails then I need to recompile some libraries :)eek:) and that isn't going to be fun.

In short, ofdx-0.1e will be ready by easter. My ISP has decided to upgrade their servers - the site is up, but I cannout update it :(

I'll let everyone know when it is available. I also have my final exams in May - I have a lot of work to do for that.
