Well, I have been doing a few lanparties lately, and I am getting sick of lugging my 80lb case and 20" LCD around. So I broke down and ordered a new Dell Inspiron E1705 today. I think it will be a pretty good lanparty machine. Here are the specs:

  • Inspiron E1705, Intel Core 2 Duo processor T7200 (4MB/2.00GHz/667MHz)
  • 17 inch UltraSharp TrueLife Wide-screen WUXGA
  • 2GB, DDR2, 533MHz
  • 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS
  • 80GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
  • 8X DVD+/-RW Drive
  • Integrated High Definition Audio
  • Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Mini Card (54Mbps)
  • Norton Internet Security 2006 90 Day Trial
  • 80 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
  • Extra-Large Nylon Deluxe Carrying Case
  • Microsoft Works 8.5
  • 2 Year Limited Warranty
  • Express Upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium
  • Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Module (2.0 + EDR)
  • Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard and Mouse
  • CoPilot Navigator 9 GPS Locator

All for $1999.23 after %25 off and a bit more.

They ended up knocking off almost $200 to make the deal final. Mostly because I didnt qualify for the no interest for 12mo. So they sweetened the deal to make me go for it. I figure I will get it paid off in around 3 months, so interest wont kill me for that amount of time.

On a side note, I priced out an exact same XPS system with the same specs and it came out to $2800. I questioned the lady about it and she said the XPS has better parts and is more upgradeable (I called BS on that one). I laughed at that one.

Xps is about same as inspiron beside different look

I wonder how much junk do they put in now. When I got my e1705 some long time ago, after it finished booting about 1min after it would ran with 70-80 processes. After windows clean up 30-40.

I always reformat them after I get them. I got an E1505 a few months ago for work, and first thing I did was reformat. 78 processes at first startup.

I am about to order an almost identical machine...

Did you call Dell to get them to knock off the money? It seems like I got less accessories than you and mine is 1965 with tax and shipping.

Yeah, I called them to order. I figured I had heard a few people get deals that way, so I would try it. If you act like you are a bit hesitant, they may say, "what can we throw in for free to make it a done deal". Thats basically what I got them to do. They pretty much threw in the Bluetooth KB & Mouse, GPS, & extra year warranty for free. Those were what I wanted, but cut at the last minute to save a bit of $. I think they also threw in 30 days of Dell On Call (a BS tech support upgrade) for idiots who dont know how to configure software stuff.

Thats a nice laptop, should be great for the lanparties.

The XPS has a more rugged build quality, shiny colors and lights, and it has hype, that is why it is more expensive.

Nice one man. Personally I would take an E1705 over a Core 2 Desktop. At 8LBS it can compete with the best and the screens are gorgous. I love watch anime on my M170. Another bonus if you lan alot, it makes it a snap. Now just get a cheap used small P3 laptop for portabilty if you need something like that.:santa: I have my XPS M170 as my main rig again, and my IBM X30 for school etc...

Well, I got it yesterday. Started it up, 67 processes after removing all of the "Junk". WTH Dell. I know they want to get a little $ for putting crap on your computer, but that is rediculous. I had it for less than 1hr, and already formatted it. Now I have 42 processes.

I will start loading games tonight and do a little benching. Maybe some OCing. Also, I need a new wireless router/AP. I currently run a Smoothwall box with an older Linksys B Router. Its a bit slow for my taste. I am looking at possibly getting a WRT54GL and removing the smoothwall from the equasion. I love my Smoothy, it's been so good to me. Haven't restarted it for over 200 days. But if this WRT54GL is like they say it is, I can do just as much with that as the Smoothy. Just a little off topic, what do you guys think about the WRT54GL? Anyone have one? Like? Dislike? Modding it?

Hum oh wait there not a POS. He has a laptop that can match your desktop in just about everything. Dells build quailty has gone way up. If you have ever seen or used some othere newer insprion or XPS line you would know they are pretty damn nice.

Yea, they're pretty nice. Especially when you get deals on em. I'd trade my desktop and laptop for that dell in a heartbeat.
