OSX harddrive backup from within linux

Ok so, I need to back up my sisters osx hard drive (music, videos, pictures). I am in linux reading it but i don't have permissions to many of her folders, Is there a way that I can change those like I would to my linux folders?

It seems like I would just need to take ownership of them, is it that simple?

Should be able to mount, chown/chmod and copy them.
