Hello all. I've just started overclocking my rig and things are going well for now, but I just ran into a problem. I've been overclocking my fsb from 166 default up to 190. I haven't had any system failures and my cpu temp is idle, 39 to 45 under load. But when I try to push the fsb to to 200, "my goal" it reboots back to the bios screen.
I know this could be because of a number of problems but I'd apprciate any advice you could give me :)

Here's what I'm running on.

windows xp home
1 gig of ram at 2700. samsung
audigy 2
ati 9700 pro: default clock speed
amd 2500 barton/ volcano 10" slim cooler
board: aopen ak79d-400vn

What kinda voltage is the Vcore, DDR, Chip, and Video at? How are yor 5 and 12vrails looking at 190?

Looks like your PSU is not providing the proper voltages. They should be slightly higher than said volts. ie +12=12.12..
This can certainly lead to unstability. THE FANMAN:cool:

The power supply I'm useing game came with my case, and is rated at 300 watts. Are you saying that the power supply itself can't provide enough juice? If so, how many watts would I need? Or is this somthing that can be adjusted in bios?
Just so I gain some knoledge here. When I raise the fsb speed or the cpu ratio, more power is needed from the psu? Thanks for the help :)

Yes as you raise the voltages the PSU must be able to supply the voltage.Your +12 should be slightly over 12volts.Your +5 should be slightly higher than 5 volts and so on.These voltages when read in the bios should be over not under. I have the PSU in the link I provided you.I got it at newegg. Its a little longer than most PSU's because it has 2 fans inline. This PSU wieghs about 6 LBS.
My stock PSU wieghed around 2 LBS..Also try upping your Vdimm voltage to 2.7 volts. Can you lock your PCI/AGP to 33/66.?? First you need to address your PSU issue. THE FANMAN:cool:

Thanks for the link, for the 32$ thats a pretty good deal. I'm going to look around at some other psu at 400 watts. But the this should fit my case I think. I'm use an antec full tower.
I'm not sure if I can lock me pci/agp v to 33/66. Ill have to check my manual and then bios. Whats the reason for doing this?
One last thing. For case cooling I've heard that it's more important to have fans that can move more air for intake then compared to the exuast. Would I be better off useing a setup like this? Right now all of my fans are the same.

Wolf,do you have a fan controller for your fans? If so they should be wired in zones.Channel 1 intakes,front...Channel 2 rear exhaust fans. This is just an example! You can set your case pressure this way. What is your current fan config ? Don't be fooled by the name of that PSU.It's of better quality than an Antec will ever be.I was leary of the low price. I read about this PSU in a article at Overclockers.com.The article was about biulding a COOL case,if I remember. As in a case that cools well.

Right now I'm useing four fans in the cases fan sockets. Two at the bottom and two more at the top. Also one slot fan under the video card. I don't have a fan controller though. I'm just useing the stock ones that came with the case. By setting the pressure do you mean the fan speed? I've seen by thermaltake that have fan controllers.
Just thought I'd mention this. I had some time today so I cut out the metal grills on the case that cover the fans. I heard that this can hurt the air flow so I thought I try it out. Also I cut a thin nylon stocking and placed it in front of the intake fans to cut down on dust bunnies.
I think ill pick up that psu by the way.

well i'd have to disagree with arch. i believe antec makes some of the best PSU's. PC power and cooling makes good ones as well as enermax. i got this power supply. i personally believe that the saying "you get what you pay for" is true when it comes to computers. the psu arch has may be good, but i've never heard of it and i never heard anyone say they are good. i'd stick with the psu's that are known to be good. not that arch is lying, im just saying its better to be safe that sorry.

aslo, a fan controller is nice, but i learned they arent very efficient. you see, if you cut the voltage to them a lot, then it produces heat, which is not good for OCers. but if you just have it so you can run them full speed to keep all the fans on one line, like i do, then you should be ok.

well like ive stated, you get what you pay for. antec, enermax and pc power and cooling are all excellent power supplies, but cost more than the cheap ones. sure you can pick up a no name 500watt for $30. but the same 500watt antec is over $100. your paying for quality. i wouldnt put much trust in the no names, but thats just me.

go read some stickies and stuff in the case and power supply section. theres some good stickies about PSU's there.

You want them to stay as close to 33/66. Most mobo's have a feature that locks it down. It would appear that yours does if they don't change. By having a fan controller and your fans wired in zones you can adjust your fan speeds to get the disired case pressure. THE FANMAN:cool:

Heres a link to back up my statement on the PSU I use
and some talk about the PCI/AGP lock. :D

I'm not sure what you mean by wired into zones, could you explain?
Also I've been reading on the guides here about useing an air duct placed close to the cpu fan to draw out the warm air. They seem to provide a difference of around a 9 degree temp drop off the cpu. Is this somthing you've tried or know if it provides any difference?
Or would this interfere with my exaust fans in some way?

Ok ,In my case (puhn) ,I have 7 case fans.My fan controller has 4 channels. Channel 1 goes to the top blow hole 1 fan exhaust.Channel 2 goes to the 2 front intake fans.Channel 3 goes to my mid-case fan partition 2 fans. Channel 4 goes to my 2 rear exhaust fans. This is a zone setup. You can raise or lower the fans in the zones to adjust your flow and pressure. THE FANMAN:cool:

Give it a shot. everyone gets diff. results. I have a link on a good PSU from newegg,if your interested. You cant beat the quality or the price. Let me know, THE FANMAN:cool:
