I will admit that I have been on the AMD side for a long time. So when I wanted to go for a dual mobo, I selected the abit vp6 from reading the forums. Now when I received the mobo I started to go shopping around for the cpus. To my surprise these processors are pricey!! So my question is, does anyone see the P3 dropping in price soon. I have heard that the P3 will be discontinued soon and intel will not resupply vendors. Any truth to this?? Computers drop in value in my opinion faster than new cars. So any input will be greatly appreciated.

yes, PIIIs are quite expenisve, but the VP-6 is an excellent board and i think you will be satisfied.....i dont think the prices will drop drastically as what you say is true the PIII will be discontinued....

for about 220$ you can get two PIII-933s off of pricewatch though the 1000mhz chips are better as they are cDos (guaranteed) and will oc extremely well (many people have hit 1.33 and higher).....

Either get dual P3-866mhz or 1000eb-133fsb version. The 866 for a little money saving, 1000 for all out. It is best to get a 133fsb version because it'll run alot quicker on dual and you can prob hit 150fsb if lucky, 140fsb is a gurantee I'm guessing.

You could do the mod to get a cel-t to run in it. I would try to run dually 1.1a's in it at 1466MHz or higher.

ol' man
Are you saying I can do a mod to the vp6 to run celerons? If so, can you direct me to where this info can be found.
thanks

If I had a VP6, I'd probably buy a couple P-III 850 (100 FSB) CPUs and try for 133 FSB for a total of 1.13 gig. Newegg.com has them for $118 with free shipping. They also had P-III 933 for $114, but it'll be tough to get dual procs stable much above 150 FSB which would only be 1.05 gig. Additionally, they had the P-III 733 CPUs for under $100 each, but those would NOT overclock that well unless you go all out on FSB speed. The 100 FSB P-III seem to be the best choice in a dual proc system if you can hit 133 FSB with them (PCI bus should be close to specs)

I admit that starts getting expensive when you need two procs and two good coolers too. Buying a couple Celeron Tualatin 1.0a gig CPUs for $65 each and taking the risk to mod the system to make it work looks rewarding if you are on a tight budget. I'd research that method very thoroughly and then decide your level of "geekness" and "handyman" abilities before proceeding down that road. Good luck, I was seriously going to build a dual P-III last year, but it never came to pass. Hmmm, maybe dual Northies for my next system???
