I was under the assumption the 1.60a was a Northwood Processor when I purchased my Mobo and CPU but Sandra reports it as a Williamette.

Am I confused? Did I get the wrong CPU?

Thanks,

Troy

WELCOME 2 THE FORUMS :D (my 1st yippe!)

sounds like a northwood 2 me.. did u inspect the chip before you installed it, if it said on the top /512/ ...its a northwood, and on your boot screen it should say your cache memory and try wcuid, or try the intel program, the prcoessor identifier... that would work perfect.. i'll find a link :D

This is the data.....does not look like Northwood to me.

Are Northwood's marked with the a (i.e. 1.60a)?

Thanks,

Troy

the heatspreader has "512k" on it if your chip is a northwood

also the northwood 1.6a's SL code is SL668

The p-4 1.6 gig with 256k cache is a Willamette and the p-4 1.6a gig with 512k cache is a Northwood. The CPU you have appears to only have 256k of cache, therefore it's a Willamette. Looks like you got a raw deal.

That's what I was thinking but here's my screwy situation. As said, the box (Retail) says 1.60a and was sealed.

Do I go back to the retailer or Intel? And at the same time, they most likely will ask me, does it run at 1.6? Well, yeah it does.

Thanks,

Troy

Also, I had the same problem with my 1.8a before I installed the bios update. What kind of mobo you got, and does it have an update to recognize the Northwood?

Disturbed makes a good point, especially if the sealed box did say 1.6a. Maybe you need an updated BIOS for it to be recognized properly.

now that there is so much could bes/should bes...
easiest way to find out now is... rip of the HSF/Block, and read the chip if it says 512 your in biz, flash the bios.. but i think that intel program should be running fine.. definitly pull the chip out and look at it.. i would. :D

Thanks for all of the replies and help guys. I am hoping that it is only the bios but am thinking that the Intel Program is or should be reporting correctly.

When I get home this evening I'll rip off the HS and see....or wait a sec......is the stock tape that is on there sticky....I don't remember. If so, then I am going to have to get some sealant before doing that.

Thanks,

Troy

You should be using a good thermal paste instead of the heat tape anyway, now you have a couple good reasons to pull the heatsink off.
