I just got to putting my 2.8C P4C800-E Deluxe system together. I plugged it in and turned it on and heard a bunch of crackling and popping and the case started filling with smoke. :( ugggggg

so I took it all apart and looked over the PS and HDs and 9700 and all seemed fine. I switched out the power supply and started it again and that bad smell started to come again (didn't notice any smoke really) so that took care of it being the power supply. I then noticed one of the chips (mosfets?) 1-1/2" below the ATX power connector, right below that big capacitor, was cracked and burned looking and has white powder from burning on it. The two other of the same type chips about 1" to the left of it have what looks to be a drop of some dark liquid on them? Not sure if those are getting ready to choke, too.

Looks like I'm off to RMA at Newegg.

Anyone else had anything like this with their board(s) ?

on a side note, this is annoying because of Newegg's 7-day warranty on RMA'ing processors so if it's a bad overclocker it looks like I'm stuck with it. oh well. :(

Since you got the mobo from them talk to them about a "reset" of sorts on the 7 days for the cpu. If they won't play nice RMA the cpu as well due to the fact you will not be able to confirm or deny if it was damaged by the faulty mobo they sold you.

Thanks for the reply :)

I did as you suggested and they already credited me on the P4 and MB and are letting me reorder.

Newegg rocks.
