Hi Guys!

As I am patiently waiting for my Abit IC7-G to arrive in a few weeks, I just popped in a P4 3.0C chip into my Asus P4G8X board. I see in the BIOS (version 1004G) that the multiplier is locked at 15 and all I wanted to do is ramp up the FSB to 200MHz (15X200=3000) so it would meet my chip specification. All the voltages are at default.

Now the problem is that when I saved the settings in BIOS and reboot, all I get is a black screen! I have to manually power it down and restart it and it goes right into the BIOS! Then I recieve this message saying that the computer did not boot due to wrong frequency settings. The only time it would boot up is when I set the FSB to 100MHz! This suck!

Any suggestions? I won't be getting my IC7-G until the first week of June due to backorder. I hate running this at 1.5GHz! Please help!

:(

this happens at 200mhz, I suppose. There was a bug, I think, that prevented you from going over 199Mhz, I think. The next version of the tweaked bios (the one that fixes your mem timings) will probably fix this, but for now, you'll have to do without those additional 15Mhz :)
Also, the chipset often (actually, always) requires more voltage to reache fsb over 190 (often for lower speeds as well), so try setting AGP Voltage (yes, it also controls chipset voltage) at 1.7
Hope this help :)

Something is wrong

Thanks for your suggestions, Mirko, but the highest frequency I can cook up without instability is 166MHz. I upped the voltages per your instructions, but to no avail. I can boot up to the splash screen at 180MHz, but it freezes there.

Sheesh, I got Corsair TwinX PC3200LL DDRs in there and they should easily hit 200+FSB at stock voltages! Tom's Hardware claims to have easily hit 200FSB in BIOS, but I think it is a crock of crap (or I may have been doing something not right). I guess I have to either wait for the new tweaked BIOS or the IC7-G to arrive ... which ever comes first I guess.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

The P4G8X is not rated for 200MHz operation. Some may squeak by, others will not. THG's article is absurd.

try setting your AGP/PCI frequency to "auto" ...

im running a 2.6C on a P4PE right now and have everything set to auto...
its been up all night at default speed :D

but if i have the AGP/PCI frequency locked, i can only go 180FSB ...

Just got off the phone with a contact at a local mom & pop computer store in the mall, and they said they had also had problems trying to run a 3.0C in a P4G8X with PC3200 ram. They were able to get it going by removing the stock northrbridge hsf and adding a copper iceberg.

yeah, northbridge get very hot, especially at 1.7v...
at the moment I don't remember which problem, but I do remember that setting agp frequency to something other than 66/33 (like 68/35 is very popular) solved some problems.. too bad I've had this set so long I don't remember what the problem was :)
also, asusboards.com has a great review about this board...

and discussion here:

they've both been very useful for me with this board. I recommend you read the whole discussion too.

one last thing, there are mods to up both northbridge voltage over 1.7 and vram since the bios setting doesn't really do anything :(
there are instructions on the second mod in forums here at overclockers in case you're interested....

for the moddded bios so that you can change mem timings :D

Thanks for all your suggestions guys!

In the midst of getting ready to try out all the suggestions on this post (AGP/PCI frequency, NB cooling, etc), my IC7-G arrived yesterday.

Tonight, the P4G8X is coming out and the IC7-G is going in along with the 3.0C chip. The P4G8X wasn't a bad board, but I should have listened to people and should have waited for the Canterwood/Springdale chipset in the first place. Being the "peripheral upgrade" addict that I am, I am constantly upgrading my system to the latest and greatest. It is just a matter of time before I switch out my 9800 Pro when the GFFX 5900 Ultra gets released ... ;)

Thanks again you guys for all for your suggestions. In fact, I will try putting a fan on the NB, upgrade to the tweak bios, and changing the AGP/PCI frequency on the P4G8X before I put the IC7-G in just to see if that did the trick. I will let you know how it turns out.

Glad to hear you received the proper board for your 3.0C. The asus P4G8X Deluxe will only run a max of 533mhz for your processor. The new abit board will get the full potential out of the 800mhz that the 3.0C will run at.

Please let us know how the new board runs.

Update

Well, I put the AGP/PCI setting to Auto, place the 1004 Tweaked BIOS, and placed a 40mm fan on the NB. I was able to hit 180FSB, but Prime95 crapped out in about 20 minutes. Oh well ...

I did find the time to upgrade the IC7-G and let me tell you guys ... UNBELIEVABLE! I got two WD Raptors in RAID-0 on 64K Stripe and the system is NOT overclocked yet. I scored 68K in Sandra 2003 drive bench, 4900 on Sandra memory bench, and 17,500 on 3DMark2001SE! Looking good so far!
