I've just bought a peliter on the cheap, but it's got no markings on it to tell me the it's power rating. I understand that if it's too powerful it'll damage/destroy my peltier and powersupply, so I don't want to plug it in unless there's a good chance of it being safe.

Don't know what to tell you. If you had the right equipment you could measure the characteristics for yourself. However, since you are asking these questions I presume you don't know how to do this testing.

I'd suggest you just buy a pelt with known characteristics. Anything you bought cheaply is more than likely not powerful enough to be useful.

were did you get it? one way you can test is the resistance, but then you need the voltage, V^2*R
