Is their a way to install and run photoshop in linux. I am in the process of installing gentoo with gnome as my GUI. Will i need wine or wineX and how will its performace be?

AFAIK Photoshop will work under Wine, there is a screenshot of it on the wine page www.winehq.org. Whether or not it will be a pain in the butt to get working I don't know. Since it isn't a 3D application or an internet application it should be a bit easier than some others are.

Pranks7er's suggestion about Gimp is also a good idea. Gimp can open .psd files I think, and for basic photo editing and retouching it is an excellent program.

I guess you haven't tried any recent gimp distributions. I don't know about on linux, but the windows port is set up almost exactly like potatochop. Maybe I'm just bias because I'm cheap. :)

Ps. IMO, adobe products are hobbyist software in a professionally priced box... Ex. compare final cut pro to premiere, avid to either. With avid you get what you pay for... With open source you get what you deserve

I'm sure I once had Photoshop running on Linux using WINE. I have to say that the GIMP is also a superb graphics proggie and a worthwhile alternative if Photoshop wont work out.

i know PS7 runs in wine. How i dont know. PSCS, mite be different. especially with the activation.

Crossover office is the surefire way of most M$ apps.

Hmmmm...Good luck getting a job in any pre-press oriented company. Adobe products are the world standard for pre-press layout. You can use open-source until you're blue in the face, but very few (if any) professional print shops will be able to handle them. FWIW, gimp is not a bad program for simple photo editing, but is a pale reflection of Photoshop's robust image editing capabilities at the professional level. Try doing a multi-channel joined mask with feathering in LAB with Gimp...

I agree 100%..

I have never used Photoshop before but the GIMP does everything I need it to do and much more. It is lots of fun modding and cropping pictures for jokes and that kind of thing.
