I just saw the new splinter cell game requirements SM.3 ONLY!.. And.. I cant believe they would screw people using the XATI cards.. I mean.. I JUST upgraded to a X700... Does anyone know if this is actually going to become a trend with all new releases?

You had to know that this would happen eventually....

Yes.. but NOT SO FAST!.. I mean.. Just a year ago TI cards were still supported.. the X cards are only 2 years old...

They'll probably release a SM2 patch at the least. If they don't, then I can predict they're going to lose a lot of money and customers. It's just not logical.

And as for games being DX10 only.... I can predict that'll happen in 4 years or so.

Yea I was pretty ticked off too :( When I dled both demos nowhere did it tell me that it was SM3.0. What kind of a management do you have to have to make such a lame decision? Obviously you're going to exclude thousands of players.

Actually this dates back almost a Year I belive.

And no you can still play it, cuz the ATI cards ARE sm3 capable, however as of december last year there was an issue with WHQL on their SM3 drivers (atis I mean). The sm3 is in there somwhere but has to be "unlocked" which means you wont be able to use the sm3 drivers with vista, cuz only WHQL certed drivers are allowed to install.

EDIT:nm guess im wrong. (was trying to think back over a year.. still cant find the right keywords to google :( Although did find my post on XS about the link was to an inquirer article, and that just doesnt stand up in a court of law IMHO)

i recall reading something similar, or the same thing about a year ago when i was trying to decide between the x700pro, or x800 and 6600gt. details are hazey like my memory.. but i think ati was getting malfunctions with sm3 under certain conditions.. i could be wrong tho, it was a long time ago..

Not so fast? Dude it's been YEARS... and this is the computer technology world we're talking about.

I told ALLLLLLLLLL Y'ALL ATI fans in numerous threads throughout the past five months "Ya know you might want to at least get a card that has Shader Model 3"

You know what this one dude had the never to say to me (he was trying to decide between an X800XT and a 7600GT)? Wait... I'll find the link and show you. But needless to say it's always better to go with the card that has newer tech.

Now you know why.

Years.. as in 2 years.. It normally takes like.. 3 years for one series of cards to be completely phased out.. Or thats from my expirence.. and this is FASTer then the phasing out of cards in the past..

I mean.. the radeon 9X series is still in use for most modern games too... they basically took out 2 whole generates of cards with one game..

Just like when BF2 came out and those heaps of nVidia users with their TI 4x00 series that kicked ***, it couldn't do SM so it ultimately forced them to upgrade.

The Radeon 9X series was a special case... I myself held onto to my 9600 Pro until I upgraded four months ago. But that card was an exception.

And yes... '2' does qualify for the term "years." Though I believe the x700 series has been out longer than that (unless I'm thinking of the x600s if there was one.)

If you actually got your card 2 years ago, then I do feel bad for you. But if you got your card in the past year or so... with alllllll the different options, and didn't get Shader Model 3 just because you didn't CARE about SM3... then I can't really give you much sympathy.

I guess I'm still mad at that one guy from the general video cards thread. :)

(I can't find the post anymore because it only lists my last 500 posts and I've got 500 posts in the last month alone  )

Hm.. Well I had no other option realllyy.. I got the card... erm.. last month.. XD.. but I was doing a trade for it since I had no money to purchase a card... But yeah.

Edit- That reminds me.. does anyone know if any other games being released in the next 6 months will not offer support for the X series of ATI cards?

It was 2 years ago the Xhunder series cards came out. I got a x700 the day the showed at best buy because my ti4200 rolled over and gave up the day before.

Last month...

You should've been in line on BF then. If you were first in line you coulda sold some of those tickets and got at least enough to get a 7600GT...

Computer gaming you got to keep ontop of technology. If you can't your passed up in many area's, mainly speed, quality, and eye candy.

If you don't want to worry about upgrading for games you'll have to look at the consoles.
