Hey gang,

Right now I'm running a system that is basically the same as it was around this time last year. It's a Pentium III 500 (cA0) @ 775 and a Soyo 6BA+ IV. 256MB Micron PC133, Rage 128, Western Digital WD205BA, SB Live, 3Com NIC. It's a good system, but I think it's time for an upgrade.

With Christmas coming up I finally have a chance to get some new stuff. I'm in college, and I'm more or less broke all the time. Hopefully within about a week I'll have a system that will leave me some room for an affordable upgrade in the Spring.

I'm planning on building a Thunderbird system. Right now I have in the mail an Alpha PEP66 (I'll use the socket mod Leufkens thought of) and a Hercules 3D Prophet II (Geforce MX). For the video card, I had a gift certificate credit at Amazon.com - and the MX cards are hard to find - I thought it was something I should jump at.

This weekend I'm hitting the local computer show. I think I'll get an Abit KT7-RAID and a T-Bird at about 750 MHz or so. I'll look for a Dresden chip, blue core, with a code of AEEA, AHEA, ADFA, or AVFA (I've heard the last one is especially good).

What do you think? How far are you taking your TBirds, and what speed is a good one to buy at? Is there a better KT133 board out there? If there's anything you think I'm leaving out, let me know. I want to cover my bases before I buy on Saturday...

Thanks!

Your shopping list sounds good to me. You have done your homework on the Tbird. You might want to consider the ASUS A7V. Many people are reporting better OCs on the ASUS. But it doesn't have any ISA slots, so forget that old modem, network card or soundcard.
