Put together an old Pent.1 out of parts and cannot load any Mirosoft programs. When putting it together the CD-ROM was setup as Primary IDE slave and the Hard drive as master. I changed the CD-ROM to secondary IDE master (yes I changed the jumper on the CD-ROM (Toshiba MX-5602B) There are three jumpers on the top of the CD-ROM that have no markings. Tried to find the manual @ Toshiba but I guess it is too old. So I changed it back to Master Slave on the Primary IDE and still cannot load Office, Publisher, etc... Yes they are registered and purchased by me as is the OS (Windows 98 retail version) It is really frustrating the hell out of me because I can load anything except Microsoft Programs. Tried to load my sisters Office 2000 no dice any suggestions would be greatly appreciated !!!! Thanks:)

Everything except Microsoft programs will Auto-Play ... When I try to access the D: drive in Control Panel or My Computer it tells me the D: drive is not accessable if anything except my Windows 98 CD is in the D: drive and is a Microsoft program. Encarta is the only thing Microsoft that will Auto-Play or that the D: drive will even recognize .... Thanks for the reply turd !!!! :)

Open your CD-Rom and clean the laser leans with some cotton moisted in alcool.
Let it dry, close the CD-Rom and Plug it in again.

I did some looking and I got the jumper settings for ya.....this is the best I could come across......so I don't gaurantee the info

but it won't hurt the cdrom or the system by changing the jumpers, will just either set the cdrom to master, slave, or cable select...

Well TheCrow and PhyscoPhreak thanks for the reply's ... I took your advice Crow and cleaned the laser lens and Phreak the image of the jumpers are correct for the Toshiba XM-5602B. There are three more jumpers on the top of the drive with CN104 beside them. I tried in all three positions to no avil...I guess messing around with old box's does have its advantages like making you pull your hair out ... LOL Thanks again for the help guys !!!! :)

ok, if it works with everything but MS I would think that the CD drive is OK(jumper wise), if it is not auto playing only MS i could guess that it is a prob with your windows installer

try this link:

this is the MS installer for win 98 :http://download.microsoft.com/download/WindowsInstaller/Install/2.0/W9XMe/EN-US/InstMsiA.exe

install that prog it may solve your prob, it is the windows installer 2.0 from the MS page
from this page

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=32831

hope that is it, but who knows with those MS quirks
